This product does work and gives a lot of satisfaction to find that you are able to transfer those precious VHS tapes to DVD before they fade away or VHS recorders finally become museum pieces! My only niggles (my non-techie ability): Installing the software on Vista was confusing. The on-screen instructions did not match what the handbook said should happen. However, Vista sorted it out unaided. The editing software is more than enough in it's power and facilities for me but, again, needs patience and experimentation to get the hang of it. These are minor niggles - it works but only if you have a PC that equals or exceeds the minimum requirements for operation. I've been using Photostory for a month. Before that I struggled with Ulead Pictureshow, Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 and Premiere Elements 3 and Acrobat 7 for .... strewth, a year? Seemed like two. Magix Photostory is streets ahead of this competition if you want to produce slideshows. It just does that, and very well. The others (apart from Ulead) range far wider, and in my opinion, fail. Photostory is not faultless, but by the standards prevailing, it is excellent.
Good points - The timeline is excellent, and this is where you spend your time. Navigating back and forth never makes this program lag or jump, unlike the others. Was recommended this by a friend. Was amazed, so easy to use. I'm not technical (have to get the kids to operate the remote control virtually!!) but this was fantastic. Easy instructions and product did exactly what it says. Breathing new life into my old collection of music classics.

Now I'm no musician in fact I can't play a note and I have a singing voice like a cat being strangled. Despite these obvious shortcomings, back in the 80's some mates and I formed a band. None of us could sing, one could play guitar and one the keyboard with 1 finger. We recorded 2 albums of songs to amuse ourselves and our mates.
Now 20 odd years later we're all pushing 40 and 2 of us reformed the band, the two of us that couldn't play a note. So I bought this program and the Sound Essentials 6 pack and the 2 of us sat down to write some songs. And its a piece of cake. I recently purchased this from Amazon and I am at pains to wonder why on earth I didn't purchase it before. The options about what you want to do and how you want to do it are there from the word go. If it was a video game it would score high on the pick up and play axis. It is straight forward to use and very easy to install. There are a few things that could have been better for me. 1. It has replaced windows media player as my default player and while this is easy to put right I wish it hadn't done it. I like and am familiar with windows media player. 2. It only gives you 20 goes with converting copied content to mp3. I find this a bit odd because all the mp3 players I have owned have come with a cd-rom that contains an mp3 converter. Also, my ... For the price, this program offers an astonishing array of features - it's a fully functioning audio and midi recording studio environment complete with mastering effects, vst and directX support and re-wire. If you don't know what any of those are, don't worry, it comes complete with an array of built in instruments and effects so you can complete a song or track without ever going "outside the box".
Simply stunning for the price. And friendly. And the support (i've used both email and forum-based support networks for this program) has been brilliant. Just started using it and not only is it great for movies I used it for my photo editing and made a brilliant DVD using the template facility. The amount of extra special effects is stunning and easy to use the multi tracking idea is simple and in truth addictive. 10/10 from me
