A few months ago I bought a new laptop which came with Vista Home Premium pre-installed. I've now had the opportunity to compare Vista to my desktop PC's XP installation. In summary Vista doesn't make a compelling upgrade. Memory usage is considerably higher, the default User Account Control setup is so overbearing that I disabled it completely and from the perspective of the end user the new features seem to be mostly related to visual tarting up and transparency effects. These new features add nothing much to productivity. The frequency and volume of critical security patches to apply seems to continue as with XP. There are some useful features but most of these can be added to XP by using existing free applications. Not a worthwhile upgrade.

Not worth spending the money.
Whilst the interface is quite intuitive and easy to use, I was most disappointed with the inability to import or export data. You can export items to a spreadsheet, however the inability to import data in CSV, QIF or other formats makes me wish I had kept my £20 and just carried on using a Spreadsheet or Access. If you're like me you live with windows XP because you have to,
in an ideal world, all those games and applications you want to run would work on something more stable like Linux. But Unfortunately because they don't, so I couldn't honestly recommend anything else for the typical PC user. "Prepare yourself for the most reliable, secure and responsive Windows yet." admittedly that's true it is the most reliable WINDOWS yet. Out of the box though, you would be very wise to add a few security features yourself. I suggest that when you use windows you MUST have a virus scanner, AVG is a good low cost option as they have an adequate free edition. I tried this with a little trepidation both as I was moving up to Vista and had heard scary comments about it and also some of the comments on here which were less than optimistic. I was not helped because initially i only used on monitor and one internet connection!
Still, that all being said, this product worked exactly and I mean exactly as it said on the box, with only a little bitty leaflet to tell you what to do. I shifted 90GB (yes, really, bearing in mind that it compacts the files by around 50% as it loads it (quirkily!) into the 'removal van', unpacking at the arrival end) by setting it going overnight.
