What can I say about the Sims which has not been said a million times before.
The origional installment of the sims (and all of it's add-ons) must be one of the most sucessfull games of all time and that just about says it all. This game allows you to play got with the lives of a group of little sims, your job is to build them a house, get them a job and make sure they don't starve to death (unless you want them to!) after that it's up to you. You can nurish your little family to ensure they prosper. You can leave them to their own devices and see how long they servive or you can think of ever more cruel and humilliating was to bring them to and early grave! This is an excellent piece of software for beginners. The advantage of using software such as this rather than books is that you learn how to pronounce words. This is very important in finnish as the words can be very long and a bit daunting when in written form. I am thoroughly enjoying using this to teach myself finnish and am surprising myself at how quickly I can pick up the words and remember them. If only I had had something like this when doing french at school! This is only for beginners though so for more complicated phrases etc and grammar you also need to purchase a good dictionary and grammar book.

There is a french video in this CD-rom which is great fun and had me enthusiastically returning to my PC for more. The video tells the story of a french farming family preparing for a birthday.
After watching the video, you use an interactive learning section, which involves listening to a section of the video and trying to accurately type the conversation out in french. I found this very engaging, but it would be impossible for a beginner. The video is fairly short so, although it was fun, I didnt learn alot from it. There is another section on the CD-rom for learning basic practical french (for getting around france etc). There is no video, only text and speech.
