Bitdefender has a good reputation but unfortunately I have had several problems with this product. First, it doesn't seem to easily coexist with my 3rd party anti-spyware product which I have had to switch off. Secondly, I have also found it to be unstable and it crashed again today, which prompted this review. Thirdly, the interface sometimes doesn't seem to respond when I try to click on the buttons. I hope that other people have had a better experience but I am sorry that I switched from my previous antivirus product.

I upgraded from Ghost 9 to Ghost 12 specifically to use the Recovery Point feature as I am upgrading from XP to Vista and wanted a restore point. Sadly, this much hyped feature doesn't work. The problem is that unless the source disk is completely clean (no bad sectors, no CRC failures) the Recovery Point simply fails. When it does fail there is a link to follow to download somthing called Autofix. This doesn't work either - in fact, it won't install at all (it appears to download ok, but the install doesn't run). When Autofix failed I followed the link to the Symantec tech support pages only to find this takes you to Ghost 10 info and not Ghost 12. Booting from the ISO image CD that Ghost 12 creates (which does work) allows you to run ... Read More:

After struggling for months with the dreadful Norton 360, I'm so glad that I've managed to find a stable, simple, non-infuriating security system which doesn't slow my PC to a crawl.
I'm sure that none of the systems on the market are 100% perfect - but the vast gulf between this product and Norton makes a 5 star rating entirely reasonable.

This one is ok I guess, no problems with viruses on my computer - however many times the "M" icon at the foot of the screen turns black indicating the software is disabled - It's easy to enable it again - just a click on "enable", but why?? Sometimes the software is a actually running despite the black icon, sometimes it really is disabled! Hmmm . . . the guessing game doesn't exactly leave you with a warm secure feeling!

This works well but...if you have any kind of hardware/software problem that requires a reinstall more than a couple of times or you restore a Ghost image, every time you switch on you are required to 'activate the product' until Symantec disables it - Symantec customer care is the worst I have ever encountered. More like customer don't care! If you manage top get through to somebody who can speak English all you get is a standard 'it's company policy that the product can only be installed three times and only on one PC and you will have to purchase a new copy' even though you have paid them for a subscription!, they treat you as a potential software pirate (a criminal) even though it's Symantec sofware that has caused the problem in the first place! ... SD is, in my opinion, a great product, but I have established (after many years of use) that their customer service is truly dreadful.
Recently, I took out a subscription for Spyware Doctor . I had had a previous version of SD with Antivirus, but didn't want to pay for antivirus software I don't need/want, so I uninstalled the old version and bought a completely NEW subscription of SD (ONLY). I downloaded the software and ran the executable, following the instructions, but when I click on the 'Spyware Doctor' shortcut (or go through start>programs), I am told that I need to perform a Smart Update to download the malware removal databases (it doesn't open up the regular SD window). If I click on this it tries to go into a smart update and ... Read More:

I have used many different antivirus programs in the last 10 years or so and Avira has by far impressed me the most. It is a lot cheaper than many of it's competitors, it is constantly coming out top 3 in antivirus tests (see AV-Comparatives.org), it is very light on system resources, has not slowed down any computers I have tried it on and the interface is simple and easy to use.
The guy below who said the support was appauling obviously did not find their support forum. I too was worried about the support, seeing that Avira is German. However, once I found their online support forum my mind was put to rest. They offer excellent free support and many of the members are very knowledgeable security experts.
Search google for "Avira ... Read More:
