I've been in IT for over 30 years, many of them using MS products. I have an IQ of around 140. It took me five minutes to get into the stupid, fiddly plastic packaging. Absolutely appalling design - unless it was designed as a MENSA puzzle!
Then I tried to activate the full key having been using a 60 day free trial key. That in itself is an adventure. The instructions provided were useless. The instructions on the internet were useless but I got there in the end. The product itself is fine and great value but they don't half make you work for it. 0/10 for packaging, 0/10 for activation instructions, 8/10 for the product. >>More Details |

Norton 2009 is a vast improvement on its predecessors. It has built on the positives of previous versions and Symantec actually seem to have learnt from criticisms levelled by many in the past, including myself.
This version is quicker to install, update, and use than any of the previous versions I have used and it is less pedantic in addressing programmes it hasn't registered before. It still seems to offer a great level of protection, much better than many of its rivals, and blends well with XP and Vista. Another great improvement in NIS 09 is that the price is down significantly from previous years, even for the multiple computers version which previously has been ridiculously expensive. I recently purchased IS9 having done some pretty comprehensive research and running of different makes of trial software on a spare laptop. I was originally using Zone alarm but when they updated the software to new version it was a disaster with crashes/slowdowns/poor booting etc and the forum was full of unhappy bunnies. I watched and waited and although the next release was better it was still not good. I started researching.
After many trials I settled on Kaspersky Internet Security 9.0. I had used a previous version so had a degree of familiarity. I bought the three user version and the installation and set up on my XP (SP3) machine was totally smooth and has been running well ever since. Presently on PcPro's `A-List', Adobe Elements is a cut down version of Adobe's £500+ Photoshop/Photoshop Extended CS4, and costs considerably less while still having a lot of useful photo editing capabilities. Photoshop CS4 has a steep learning curve, but Photoshop elements is far more home-user friendly. A lot of the program is geared towards image storage and management of the photos on your hard drive, helping with emailing, web output and scrapbooks of your images. The program can auto-downloads your images from the camera to folders, set up using the date, and can even process the images, say automatically removing red-eye, while it does it. I'm not the World's best driver - quite the opposite in fact so I was glad when this product popped through my letter box as I'd hoped for a much needed refresher in the finer points of keeping myself alive on the roads.
I wasn't disappointed. This item is especially useful for the theory and hazard perception parts of the test - the point and click where the hazard is section is particularly useful I found - and works much better than the actual test software itself at the testing centre! The question banks for the theory test are thorough and highly realistic too - and very varied. I have managed to load this okay.
I had a little stumbling block when it wanted to 'learn what emails are spam'. It was taking ages and I do not need this service as I use Yahoo Mail, but when I tried to skip over this it locked up. I had to close down the installation and start again but the same thing happened. This could have been a problem on my side, as my machine then talked about Windows Mail running when it wasn't. I resolved this by forcing Windows Mail to stop in the tasks manager. Kasperspy is now loaded and looks pretty good. It has a nice user friendly menu which lets me see exactly what's going on. This has been 6 years that I've been using Norton. I feel safe going online with it and have never had a virus dispite surfing the net everyday. People have often complained to me that Norton slows down their PC. Well in the past it has affected mine, but it was a small price to pay. This new version however is a much less bulky program and hardly affects the PC at all. I have it on 2 Acer laptops too and they are far from high performance. They still run like a dream. You can't go wrong with this program for your family computers. Buy It.

My latop is very powerful and was bought specifically for photo editing, yet with Vista 64 the program constantly crashes (around every 10 minutes) then requires a full refresh of thumbnails before it is useable again. This can take several times with a few thousand photographs, therefore taking hours for a single edit!

Office 2008 is ok. The interface is normal. It doesn't crash all that much. It is quite compatible. Its all right. Blah.
If only Microsoft hadn't lost their nerve and made something as lovely as the PC Office 2007. I'm a dual user and find myself drifting back to my PC when I want to do anything work related. And that is a shame. It's just like the old days - Mac for media fun and PC for serious work and gaming. Some things never change. Not much point upgrading from 2004. >>More Details |
