If you are obsessed with history, ancient monuments, architecture and relics this is probably the book for you.

As a tourist guide, to tell what is worth seeing/photographing, i.e the aesthetics, I find it virtually useless. It does give routes, with some warnings about where congestion may occur in the summer and identify some parking spaces, but the rest is generally vague and somewhat inconsistent. Even the restaurant prices are given in Francs, in a used copy which may not be the latest edition but a book with a 2001 copyright.

This review is in the context of having already booked accomodation and wanting to plan a detailed itinerary, with intensive and diverse photography in mind, in advance, this being my standard ... Read More:

Travel : Corsica (Cadogan Guides)

Corsica (Cadogan Guides)

Corsica is a much larger and more varied island than the first time visitor might expect so a good guidebook is essential, (Corsica is roughly the same size as Wales). The Cadogan Guide has an excellent balance of reference and background information, with enough detailed text to allow informed decisions on where to visit. However, some simple local maps to accompany the guide's recommendations would have been helpful as even a Michelin roadmap struggles to make sense of Corsica's rural roads, leading to a few wrong turns on the way when hunting for that remote beach or tower, (not a real problem if you've adopted a suitably chilled out holiday mood). I'd recommend Corsica to those who love the rural and less developed regions of mainland France and ... Read More:

First off, I have to say that any country guide that gets the notes and coins of the local currency wrong should be viewed with the deepest suspicion! (Rogerson thinks that there's a 10 Dihram note...). Having said that, despite Rogerson's occasional tendency to snobbery, this is a concise, informative and very readable effort. Crucially, we felt that it neglected likely day-trip destinations around Fes, the restaurant recommendations are annoyingly opinion-free, and no mention was made of Morocco's appallingly badly behaved ATM network. Still, a good alternative to Lonely Planet's dated tome. I'd give it 3.5/5 if I could, just coz the cover's so much nicer in design than it's rivals.

Greece: Peloponnese (Cadogan Guides)

This is a unique guide book. it is written by authors who are clearly in love with their subject. After spending a lot of time in the Pelopennesse in the 70's I returned 5 years ago. I was delighted to find it so unspoilt. This guide book does what the others do but with much more passion and brio. If you want a guide that goes in some depth about the history as well as hotels and beaches then get it straight away !!! There are detailed notes on ancient sites. It also gives you a good idea for how touristy or otherwise an area is. In my view the best there is.
