You'll enjoy this! A guide to Athens for anyone with even the vaguest interest in the Classical world. This book is readable, fun, and beautfully illustrated with line drawings and colour plates. As with 'Ancient Rome on 5 Denarii a Day' there are fun info boxes and quotes (e.g. 'Cicadas chirp up in the trees a month or two, but our Athenians keep chirping over lawsuits all their lives...' Aristophanes, The Birds )
Categories include:
GETTING THERE
THE PIRAEUS
ORIENTATION
ATHENIAN PASTIMES
MEET THE ATHENIANS
CITY OF GODS
MUST-SEE SIGHTS
There is also a glossary of 'Useful Phrases' at the end. My favourite is 'A Spartan, an Athenian and a Boeotian went into a tavern...' in ... Read More:

Whenever I am going on holiday, one of the most exciting things for me is buying the rough guide before we go. On the rare occasion that I haven't done this i've felt I've gone into things blind and not taken the best choices in terms of trips etc.
This rough guide did prove invaluable on our trip to Sharm el Sheik and a day trip to Cairo, however the one thing I would question, and I find this is generally the case with Rough Guides, is that the prices quoted for meals and, in this case especially, taxis is often way out. We travelled only a month after this book was published, so I would expect it to be much more up to date than it was.
The info on Sharm was pretty basic for our needs (it focuses a lot on diving, ... Read More:

OK, I love Rough Guides and always have done. But even allowing for this obvious bias this really is a superb book.
All of the usual information is there; the best places to see & do; how to get around by public & private transport; maps of major towns/cities; a v useful guide to (delicious) Keralan food & drink; local customs etc. You would expect this from a guide book, of course, but Rough Guides does this better than anyone else, and 'Kerala' is no exception.
The excellent 'Contexts' section, which fills in the history of this unique, fascinating, beautiful Indian state; and the feature 'text boxes' of a particular aspect of Keralan culture allow for a good understanding of the state, essential when ... Read More:

I've always had a great love of our fantastic British Coastline. It has always been my ambition to carry out the complete tour. Perhaps one day I will achieve the ambition! For the meantime I will have to make do with the books and the DVD's! I notice that the first book "coast" received some criticism by the reviewers here on Amazon so I was keen to check out if the 'grumbles' applied to the 2nd volume "The Journey Continues". As far as I'm concerned I have no complaints at all...this is a wonderful book. It contains 16 area tours in all starting from the south coast working in a clockwise fashion from Dover ending up and finishing in London. The Channel Islands, Ireland, Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland are included. There is a gazetter ... Read More:

Although having been to Disneyworld previously this is the first time I have bought this book. They state that they will give the real picture and this they certainly do, in a very humorous way. The book is littered with hints and tips and gives information on the best ways to go on rides and which ones are usually worth the wait. However, I think sometimes there is a bit too much information which could reduce a lot of spontenaity. The do everything as quickly as possible approach my be ok if you are only in Orlando for a few days but for Brits going over there for three weeks it just sounds exhausting. Some of the advice is good, such as taking rest days. The section on Walt Disney World with Kids is excellent. For the first time I will be going ... Read More:

If you take one trip a year and never go to the same place twice, even the most fortunate person will probably visit no more than 50 different places in a lifetime. What a great idea it is to be more aware of what your choices are before taking one of those 50 trips.
The book is organized around nine themes as described thusly on the contents page:
1. Across Water (Unforgettable voyages, from luxury cruises to dugout canoes)
2. By Road (Chasing the horizon: legendary drives and secret detours)
3. By Rail (Watching the world pass by your window)
4. On Foot (The pleasures of the oldest and greenest mode of travel)
I loved my stay at Barcelona, I tried to cramm in as much as I can in 3 days so I got 3 travel guides and this was one of them.
It contains 3 important maps: A map of Barcelona, a map of the gothic quarter, and a subway map. These maps are clear and well detailed.
By using the top 10 guides I managed to plan out all the must see places and the best places to eat - I definitely recommend the sagrada famiia. + there are top ten guides for each district so you can find out what is near you.
Out of the guides I have seen, this and the AA one are easily the best.
