The pictures are just awful on the whole. A few are ok, but some are so bad I just don't want them staring at me. Given the number of photos lonely planet must have, I don't know what the production team for this calendar were thinking. Decent size calendar but that's as far as it goes.

The Cities Book (Lonely Planet Pictorial)

from: Lonely Planet Publications

The Cities Book is a wonderfull brief look at 200 cities around the world. As I go on 5-6 city trips a year I have found it invaluable as a quick quide to where to visit next. But oh dear, there are so many mistakes here. Both descriptions of cities, misnamed photos, innacurate statistics. Did no one ever proof read this book. Please Lonely Planet, send me the next one and I'll do it for free!

and the best guide I've come across for India. Packed with detail and a reasonable cultural/ historical introduction. Maps are great, the timetables are pretty accurate, the opening times and prices are correct...

There are some very bad LP guides out there. Vietnam springs to mind. But LP India has been consistently good throughout the years. I think I've used 4 versions of the guidebook and have been pleased with the improvements everytime.

Obviously the negativities are that it is pretty big but how else are you supposed to cram in all that information.

This more than just a description of a museum. This is also a journey into the history of the natural sciences and a part biography as well. Well illustarted, Richard Fortey describes an institution that is trying hard (and succeeding if the new Darwin Centre is any guide)to move with the times, make science accesible to the public, yet has more going on behind the scenes than we could ever give credit.

Anyone who lives in or visits London should pay more than one visit to this marvelous place, and thanks to this book they will be well briefed as to what goes and has gone on there.

I had the choice between this book and the readers digest equivalent. The Book People were at work so all I got was a quick look through and decided on this one pretty much just down to the fact this book had little maps which provided an overveiw of each walk - I have to have maps wherever I go because I will get lost otherwise.

I got back to my desk, had a look at reviews on Amazon for both books and was pleased when the Readers Digest one didnt seem to do too great but this was then blown away because this book had NO reveiws.. and to be honest I don't know why.

When I got home I had a good look through and I was very pleased this was my choice.. it is so well thought out. I'm not particularly into walking but I do go ... Read More:

A book of out of the way, out of the ordinary camping is a terrific idea, which is why I bought the book. Many of the sites featured look amazing, and they have all been personally 'road-tested' by the CC crew. So far so very good. However there is a (quite a big in my view) downside in that although there is on the surface a large choice of sites, in reality this amounts to an average of less than four sites in each of the 23 counties/regions represented.

So if you want to use this to plan a trip, rather than take it with you, then its really good and will get you to some really interesting off-the-beaten-track places (and I do intend to try some of them out), but much less use as something you carry around in your panniers or glove ... Read More:

There are very many things that I love about this book. So far I've had it a very short time and have already had an incredibly therapeutic swim, about 10 miles from where I have lived for over 20 years, which I had no idea was there. It was the most beautiful spot and the pub recommended in the book was such a find, being friendly, serving good beer and food, having a gorgeous wildflower garden and being over a thousand years old.

Having this book means I am much more likely to get out and swim in beautiful places, and not just paddle, worried about currents, debris and pond weed. So all those good intentions are finally coming good and I can entice friends along too. It's definitely going to be the basis of many UK holidays to come.

I'm ... Read More:

Beautiful in it's self this was really useful fo pulling out the 'must see' scenic bits of China when planning an extended trip. The most useful guide book I found (and the only one of the 3 I purchased that I'll be lugging with me to China) was Frommer's China (Frommers Complete) published in April 2008.
