VHS : Fairy Tale - A True Story [1998]

Fairy Tale - A True Story [1998]

starring: Paul McGann, Florence Hoath, Elizabeth Earl, Harvey Keitel, Jason Salkey
directed by: Charles Sturridge
October 19, 1998

What a charming film with the late great Bob Peck. I knew nothing about this film, even though it was shot near where I come from in Keighley, until I read about it in MADE IN YORKSHIRE. It is also based on true events which happened in Yorkshire.

I had thought it must be dire otherwise I would have heard about. How wrong I was. Was it shown in the cinema ? I have a job tracking it down but found a copy in the Keighley lending library.

Check it out as its well worth watching.

VHS : Doris Day - Young At Heart / The Thrill Of It All / Lover Come Back [1954]

Doris Day - Young At Heart / The Thrill Of It All / Lover Come Back [1954]

starring: Rock Hudson, Doris Day, Tony Randall, Frank Sinatra, James Garner
directed by: Delbert Mann, Gordon Douglas, Norman Jewison
October 01, 2001

I loved the three videos in this box set from start to finish. "Young at Heart" introduced me to the wonders of Sinatra, who sings "One for my Baby, Young at Heart, and, my fav, One of those things," amongst other fab songs. Sinatra and Day really shine in this heart-warming musical.
"The Thrill of It All" is about a doctor (James Garner) who becomes jealous of his wife's (Doris Day) new found celebrity from a soap advertisement. It is completely hilarious! I laughed at every moment of this fantastic film!
"Lover Come Back" is also a great comedy - this time Doris was partnered with Rock Hudson. The two make great viewing. The chemistry between them, coupled with the script results in a film people will watch time and time again!

VHS : Batman (The Movie) [1966]

Batman (The Movie) [1966]

starring: Adam West, Burt Ward, Lee Meriwether, Cesar Romero, Burgess Meredith
directed by: Leslie H. Martinson
July 10, 1995

There is very little I can add to the many favourable reviews this classic Dynamic Duo adventure has already received here on Amazon. This is the Batman I remember from my early teens, and will always be the real thing as far as I'm concerned!

Unless I have missed it, none of the other reviewers have mentioned the sad fact that when it comes to Adam West and Burt Ward this film is pretty much it! No sign of any of the 120 TV episodes on DVD is to be found here, or even in the U.S., nor any mention of why that might be.

The simple explanation seems to be the fact that Warner Brothers own the rights to the Batman characters whilst Fox own the actual programmes themselves! Various websites give a more detailed explanation, but ... Read More:

VHS : Mad Max 3 - Beyond Thunderdome [1985]

Mad Max 3 - Beyond Thunderdome [1985]

starring: Mel Gibson, Tina Turner, Bruce Spence, Adam Cockburn, Frank Thring
directed by: George Miller, George Ogilvie
August 21, 1995

A thunderous and wondrous action adventure which happens to be a personal favourite of mine from the eighties. Massively underrated in its day and long forgotten by audiences over the years, Beyond Thunder dome is one of those cult classics that succeeds due to the breathtaking visuals, beautiful production design and sheer wealth of imagination on display.

Mel Gibson takes a large portion of his performance from Clint Eastwood's "Man with no name" character of the "Dollars trilogy" movies and evolves the stone cold character of entries 1 & 2 into a much more sympathetic creation. And any film that casts a terrific Tina Turner in the role of arch villainess deserves applause for originality, which this film is full to the brim with. The sets ... Read More:

VHS : The Rescuers Down Under (Disney) [1991]

The Rescuers Down Under (Disney) [1991]

starring: Bob Newhart, Eva Gabor, John Candy, Tristan Rogers, Adam Ryen
directed by: Hendel Butoy, Mike Gabriel
May 12, 1997

This sequel to the rescuers was something special to disney, as this is the first sequal of feature animation to also become a feature. This is currently the only sequel to date to become a feature; this shows disney had great expectations and faith in this film.

This film has a similar story style to the original film, where a kid gets captured and its up to the rescue aid society to come to the rescue. The character cast in this film is amazing, and the animators do an incredible job at portraying emotion and expression through them.

This film also, as many may not know, include disney first 3d visual effects in 2d animation. There is a flying sequence at the start which is actually 3D which at the time of release was breathtaking, and was a ... Read More:

VHS : Don't Eat The Neighbours [2002]

Don't Eat The Neighbours [2002]

starring: Simon Callow, Sean Cullen, Robert Lindsay, Doon Mackichan, Tim McInnerny
directed by: Andy DeEmmony, Mark Sawers, Mike Rohl, Randy MacDonald, Tom Rowe
August 26, 2002

This VHS has 4 episodes from the CITV series. The character voices include Robert Lindsay (My Family), Doon MacKichan (Smack the Pony), Tim McInnery (Blackadder) and Simon Callow (Chance in a Million). It follows the fortunes of Rabbit, his daughter Lucy and twin babies, their friend Terrapin and their neighbours Bear, Fox and the new arrivals from Canada, Wolf and his sons, Barry and Simon. The characters are well drawn and the animation which includes puppetry and CGI, is excellent. But where the series excells is in it's script, which will appeal to both young and old. It has the 'slapstick' comedy children will love but also has some great one liners. My six-year old son and I particularly liked the scene where Rabbit becomes concussed and developes a split personality where ... Read More:

VHS : The Professionals - Issue 3 - Vol. 3 [1977]

The Professionals - Issue 3 - Vol. 3 [1977]

starring: Gordon Jackson, Martin Shaw, Lewis Collins, Bridget Brice, Steve Alder
May 15, 2000

Bodie, Doyle and Cowley - What a team! I used to watch this series in South Africa on video many years ago. It has a quality which just seems to keep you interested. There is action, humour and good old British locations. It is these outdoor locations which really do make a difference.

This compilation has some great episodes on it. I particularly liked Hunter/Hunted which sees Doyle and Bodie testing and guarding a special rifle from some villains.

One might think that the series would be too dated when seen today - and it has dated of course being that it is now 22 years old - but I was not disappointed in the least with this tape.

I am sure that if you are reading this review then you are probably on the brink of buying this tape. Well ... Read More:

The Professionals - Issue 3 - Vol. 4 [1977]

starring: Gordon Jackson, Martin Shaw, Lewis Collins, Bridget Brice, Steve Alder
May 15, 2000

This volume has two of the best episodes from the series. Operation Susie is a fanatastic episode with a splendid performance from Harold Innocent. The plot about some teenagers who are being Hunted by a Government spook is well handled and the idea of the all powerful CI5 coming up against international law is great. It's quite amazing to find that they really loose out at the. A Man Called Quinn is a Harrowing tale which is has a touch of The New Avengers about it. Stephen Berkoff gives a great perfomance as a Russian interrogator. The opening sequence with Quinn breaking out is great and through-out we feel more and more sympathy for Quinn as we begin to see more of his interrogation. The weak point of the tape is Slush Fund, a slightly duller plot from the Avengers scribe Roger ... Read More:

VHS : The Wedding Singer [1998]

The Wedding Singer [1998]

starring: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Christine Taylor, Allen Covert, Matthew Glave
directed by: Frank Coraci
January 01, 1999

I LOVE this film so much. It is so funny. The music is great, and the memories of the 90's are hysterical. The cast is absolutely fantastic. You'll love every character. This is a film that will have you smiling from start to finish. The soundtrack is fantastic.

Adam and Drew give a great performance. I love Adam's 'Outburst' song about Linda. Love John Lovitch's version of ' Lady's Night' .....'CHAKA KHAN'...brilliant !!!

I like the fact that Adam continously puts his friends and family in his films.

The Wedding Singer and Happy Gilmore are films you could watch over and over again.

Adam is a comic genius, and loved by us all. I have forgiven him for 'Going Overboard' (I'm still confused by that film...what the hell was Billy Zane ... Read More:
