VHS : Sleeping Beauty [Disney 1959]

Sleeping Beauty [Disney 1959]

starring: Mary Costa, Bill Shirley, Eleanor Audley, Verna Felton, Barbara Luddy
directed by: Clyde Geronimi
May 22, 2000

This is my favourite Disney movie. The backgrounds are detailed and stylised like a series of medieval tapestries. The intergration of the characters in what look like the best sets ever designed for a semi-swashbuckling musical/comedy/thriller is stunning.
I still get frightened when the fire goes out and Maleficent appears to tempt Aurora through the back of the fireplace (Maleficent being a truly evil villainess). The score is superbly used in these scenes. Brilliant stuff.

VHS : The Naked Truth [1957]

The Naked Truth [1957]

starring: Terry-Thomas, Peter Sellers, Peggy Mount, Shirley Eaton, Dennis Price
directed by: Mario Zampi
May 27, 2002

It's hard to see this decent comedy film now as anything much more than an early vehicle for that genius Peter Sellers. For Sellers fans this film is essential. It has him playing a comic master of impersonation, which is of course what he himself was, as we can see here in this film. Vocally, I don't think I've heard a better mimic in my life - the handful of excellent voice artists we have now are all superb but could they do a whole film in character without waivering one bit, as Sellers did? Sellers was far more than a mimic though, as he proved after radio that he could really act, and not just comedy! My favourite skit of his here is the Irishman, looking 'for a bit of jelly'. Alot of these film characters he did before Cleuseu made him a superstar had reprisals ... Read More:

VHS : Steel Magnolias [1990]

Steel Magnolias [1990]

starring: Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis
directed by: Herbert Ross
July 01, 2002

I have watched this film many, many times over the years and it's still as great as the first time I watched it. A superstar cast brings with it quality acting and a superb script. Don't think I've ever watched it without crying, so if you're a Steel Magnolias virgin, or coming back to it for a repeat viewing - be sure to have the tissues at the ready....
It also has one of my all-time favourite quotes, which is something I live by...
"I'd rather have one moment of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special" - simply beautiful!

Obviously if you like your no-brainer action car-chase movies, this isn't for you. If you want a simple story of lives and friendships, beautifully written and flawless performances, with depth and character - this is essential ... Read More:

VHS : Farewell My Lovely [1944]

Farewell My Lovely [1944]

starring: Dick Powell, Claire Trevor, Anne Shirley, Otto Kruger, Mike Mazurki
directed by: Edward Dmytryk
August 10, 1998

This one of my favorite movies. Years ago I rented a VHS of it and made a dupe at home. The quality was lousy but I liked it and played it often, but I learned my lession about making unauthorized copies. My daughter's puppy urinated all over the tape. This movie is so good it even survived that.

This is classic noir, with Phillip Marlowe. The plot is about stolen jade, hidden identities, blackmail, love, treachery and murder. The story is complicated, the casting is great, the photography and voice-over narration carry things along. It has style. The ending is satisfying. And the dialogue is some of the best ever written.

Powell broke through into serious roles with this film. Even in all the singing roles he had up to this movie he exuded cocky confidence, ... Read More:

VHS : Goldfinger [1964]

Goldfinger [1964]

starring: Sean Connery, Honor Blackman, Gert Fröbe, Shirley Eaton, Tania Mallet
directed by: Guy Hamilton
November 06, 1995

Gimmicky, disjionted, over reliant on this new gadgetry which was suddenly very appealing to a fast growing consumerist society, it has far less of the essence of James Bond as in the Flemming novels than previous Bond movies. It has things in it that make it memorable, but its biggest fault was to take us down the 'wealthy mad man with a fiendish weapon of mass destruction tucked away in a holed out volcano, with a couple of hundred uniformed henchmen-cum-mercenaries happily working for him' storyline, the kind of stuff which gave Mike Myers so much material with which to ridicule the formula. It is only Pussy Galore that stops me giving this movie the dreaded one star treatment. Really, this was not the path to take our beloved 007 down. You want a proper Bond movie? Look no further than ... Read More:

VHS : The Music Man [1962]

The Music Man [1962]

starring: Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, Buddy Hackett, Hermione Gingold, Paul Ford
directed by: Morton DaCosta
March 27, 2000

It was a pleasure to see and hear Shirley Jones singing again. I bought the movie (on DVD) just to hear "Till There Was You".

I remembered Paul of "The Beatles" singing it in about 1962 at a show in Bournemouth earlier on in their career (the late great Billy Fury was also appearing at the same holiday resort).

I imagine it was the kind of song that Paul would have liked to have composed.

Shirley Jones was a very capable singer in the two 50's movies associated with her "Oklahoma" and "Carousel" and at that age, reminds me of the glorious Deanna Durbin who in turn succeeded Jeanette MacDonald. All of them were excellent actresses too. Deanna of course being a younger teenage star at first. All wonderful - we will not see their likes again.

VHS : Traffik [1989]

Traffik [1989]

starring: Bill Paterson, Lindsay Duncan, Jamal Shah, Talat Hussain, Fritz Müller-Scherz
directed by: Alastair Reid

This film is a supreme example of British drama. Based in three areas Britain, Germany, and Pakistan/Afghanistan and centred around four groups of characters: a British politician and his daughter, a Pakistan farmer and his drug lord boss, a German drug importer and his English wife, and two German detectives. It crosses the world of drug production, trafficking and consumption. The characters are believable and there is little moralising. It is well acted and scripted. The background music is occasionally annoying but is not as dominant as contemporary equivalents. This is highly recommended: it is real value for money.
