VHS : Advise And Consent [1962]

Advise And Consent [1962]

starring: Franchot Tone, Lew Ayres, Henry Fonda, Walter Pidgeon, Charles Laughton
directed by: Otto Preminger
July 21, 1997

If you're interested in how American politics works or doesn't, see this movie now. What a knock-out depressing, inspiring, convoluted, messed up, brilliant piece of work this Otto Preminger film is. Charles Laughton steals the show (his last performance?) as a sleazy southern senator. You won't believe the machinations these people perform in Washington. And while this movie was made decades ago, it's still has so much truth in it today--people set up to be scapegoats, corruption, politics like you've never see it before.

True, this is sometimes touted as a "gay" film because of the one senator who is blackmailed, though is at least bisexual, but the film is more about how the American system is put together.

A frightening, ... Read More:

VHS : Batman (The Movie) [1966]

Batman (The Movie) [1966]

starring: Adam West, Burt Ward, Lee Meriwether, Cesar Romero, Burgess Meredith
directed by: Leslie H. Martinson
July 10, 1995

There is very little I can add to the many favourable reviews this classic Dynamic Duo adventure has already received here on Amazon. This is the Batman I remember from my early teens, and will always be the real thing as far as I'm concerned!

Unless I have missed it, none of the other reviewers have mentioned the sad fact that when it comes to Adam West and Burt Ward this film is pretty much it! No sign of any of the 120 TV episodes on DVD is to be found here, or even in the U.S., nor any mention of why that might be.

The simple explanation seems to be the fact that Warner Brothers own the rights to the Batman characters whilst Fox own the actual programmes themselves! Various websites give a more detailed explanation, but it would appear ... Read More:

VHS : Santa Claus - The Movie [1984]

Santa Claus - The Movie [1984]

starring: Dudley Moore, John Lithgow, Burgess Meredith, Judy Cornwell, David Huddleston
directed by: Jeannot Szwarc
October 04, 1993

Growing up in the late 80's/ early 90's, this was the film I always waited for to come around at Christmas. This is one of those films like "It's a wonderful life" that should be around every Christmas. Make no mistake - this film as the title suggests is entirely aimed at children, but is entertaining enough for adults to watch with them. I retain a corre which still loves classic disneys so I still love this film. It seems to wrap up much of the magic of Christmas in a mere 90 mins or so. Most of the acting is perfect for the film (for serious films it would be a little melodramatic), the guy from "third rock to the sun" being a great villian with evil laughs and a view to spoil Christmas. The two Clauses are also well acted, and Dudley Moore is good as Patch, an elf upon ... Read More:

Grumpier Old Men [1995]

August 11, 1997

Do you think grumpy is natural? Think again. Learn from the experts, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. They really make an odd couple" Odd Couple II, The - Neil Simon's" (1998). Who knew they could just get grumpier. And a new cutie has been added to the mix for this second in the grumpy series.

Clash of the Titans [1981]

starring: Desmond Davis|Harry Hamlin|Judi Bowker|Burgess Meredith
October 30, 1995

There's only one reason I watch this film (or portions of it) again and again.

It's not the special effects of Harryhausen which are pretty variable in quality (my favorite is Medusa, my least favorite is that damn owl).

It's not the story which flows well enuf except for the tendency to draw out the special effects scenes (as with all Harryhausen films).

It's not the major British stars (eg, Olivier typecast as Zeus) languishing on Mt Olympus, drawing paychecks.

It's not the Americans Hamlin or Burgess, altho they do very well.

It's the heartbreakingly beautiful and talented Judi Bowker (as Andromeda) in one of her few film roles. She has a reasonable amount of screen time. And she was gorgeous in that ancient ... Read More:

VHS : The Sentinel [1977]

The Sentinel [1977]

starring: Chris Sarandon, Cristina Raines, Martin Balsam, Ava Gardner, John Carradine
directed by: Michael Winner
March 06, 2000

I am just about to buy the video of this film, as I haven't seen it for years, yet it still haunts me. It was a fave creepy book of mine in my teenage years, and although the film didn't quite live up to the book (what film does?)it is still a film with real menace, a stunning plot, and a truly shocking denouement. A forgotten classic that deserves to be on a par with films such as "The Omen" and "Rosemary's Baby".
