VHS : Bringing Up Baby [1938]

Bringing Up Baby [1938]

starring: Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Charles Ruggles, Walter Catlett, Barry Fitzgerald
directed by: Howard Hawks
January 12, 1998

I have seen this many times but the humour never wears off. Possibly the most effective pairing of Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn (I have not seen all of their films together). Hepburn is wonderfully eccentric as Susan Vance and Grant's Dr. David Huxley is ever so funny. Even when I am not watching, the thought of him in those clothes (after Susan takes away his normal ones) makes me laugh. It is impossible to choose a favourite scene as they are all brilliant, whether at the golf course, hotel, country house, etc. The film represents the genre at its best and jokes are wittily scripted, unlike modern day comedies that more often than not, use sex, bodily functions and strong language to supply the laughs. Son Of Flubber [1963]

starring: Fred MacMurray, Nancy Olson, Keenan Wynn, Tommy Kirk, Ed Wynn
directed by: Robert Stevenson
September 01, 2000

I remember seeing both this film and 'The Absent Minded Professor' in black and white at the cinema when I was a kid, and I never forgot how funny they were. The earlier one has just been shown an TV, and I was pleasantly surprised to see it had been colourised, and was just as enjoyable for me after all these years. Sadly, it appears that one is not available to buy on region 2 through Amazon at the moment but this one, 'The Son of Flubber' is.

I really wanted to see this one in a colourised version too if possible but, having searched the web, was unable to confirm that this film had ever been given that treatment. However, being on special offer through Amazon I decided to order it anyway. Imagine my delight, then, to discover that ... Read More:

Charlie Chaplin - The Essanay Films - Vol. 3 [1915]

starring: Charlie Chaplin, John Rand, Paddy McGuire, Dee Lampton, May White
directed by: Charlie Chaplin
July 11, 1994

On the case to this box set it states there is a Charlie Chaplin documentary called The Chaplin Puzzle, to date I have purchased 2 copies of this box set and both times there is no documentary so BEWARE when buying this. As in other reviews, the quality of the films mainly the very early ones is very poor(no restoration here I'm afraid). If you want to buy this you are better off buying the Essential Charlie Chaplin Collection on page 1 under the Charlie Chaplin heading, although you don't get The Adventurer,The Kid,Triple Trouble,The Bond,Shoulder Arms,Sunnyside and Days Pleasure. The documentary on this collection, Chaplin-His Life And Work is,I think the Chaplin Puzzle that is missing from the NTSC version though. So there you have it,its ...
