VHS : Women in Love [1969]

Women in Love [1969]

starring: Alan Bates, Oliver Reed, Glenda Jackson, Jennie Linden, Eleanor Bron
directed by: Ken Russell
June 21, 1993

This is a nice film, satisfying in so many ways, even if the sad conclusion is anything but, but that's the nature of romantic tragedy. This is Oliver Reed's finest film performance (apart from maybe Gladiator), and must be Ken Russell's best movie bar none. Good authentic adaption of DHL, a writer whose works often arouse strong emotions one way or another. In fact human emotion is often the main focus of all his works, rather than the more overt themes of class, or raw passion. This film has a lovely period feel to it, is very intimate in its portrayal of the relationships between people with different personalities and feelings, and it distills the mood or essence of DHL perfectly. If you're prepared for a more involving, slower paced sort ... Read More:

VHS : A Woman Of Substance [1985]

A Woman Of Substance [1985]

starring: Jenny Seagrove, Barry Bostwick, Deborah Kerr, Diane Baker, George Baker
directed by: Don Sharp
June 02, 2000

Very first time I saw this unforgetable movie in Kuwait in 1996.it was recorded on VHS tapes. Believe me I saw this movie more than 100 times and every time I found it more informative, more practical, more live commentary of an innocent girl's life. It shows to us how the circumstances push us towards the fate. Emma the heroin, acts at her best and put you in tears when in troubles and sorrows. Her mission to get revenge from Adwin( her flirt lover) is a real reaction of a common woman. I advised and provided this great movie to most of my female friends and cousins to watch and get moral support from it when they fall in troubles like Emma. Now when my two daughters are quite grown up and need guidence. Unfortunately this movie is very hard to find ... Read More:

VHS : The Music Lovers [1970]

The Music Lovers [1970]

starring: Richard Chamberlain, Glenda Jackson, Max Adrian, Christopher Gable, Kenneth Colley
directed by: Ken Russell
August 13, 1990

This film has so much going for it that you should stop and think twice before dismissing my claim.
First of all it is a genuine Tragedy in the Aristotelian sense.
Secondly, it the Tragedy of a major musical genius who is also a popular romantic artist.
Thirdly, he is treated by Russell as the representative Romantic Artist who tries but fails to live up to his ideals. This has always been Russell's main theme as an filmaker but we need to have his films about Debussy, Rossetti, Isadora Duncan and Richard Strauss, to put alongside some of the ones we have, to see this pattern as a whole.
It also touches profoundly, especially at the climax, on the subject of shamanism and genius.
Fourthly, the expressionistic visual style ... Read More:

The Slipper And The Rose [1976]

starring: Sherrie Hewson, John Turner, Rosalind Ayres, Keith Skinner, Polly Williams
directed by: Bryan Forbes
February 03, 2003

This is a truly enchanting musical version of the Cinderella story. I first watched this as a young girl and I've recently watched the DVD a number of times. I was amazed that even though over 10 years have passed I remembered most of the story, including song lyrics and dialogue...obviously it made a big impression on me the first time around! Watching the film as an adult is a real treat. There is a lavish quality to every aspect - from the beautiful costumes to the stunning landscape and gauzy cinematography. It makes me laugh and it makes me cry and, by the end, I'm cheering!

The Slipper and The Rose is the kind of film that appeals to adults as well as children. There are many funny jokes and clever songs that are great to sing along ... Read More:

The Lair Of The White Worm [1988]

starring: Amanda Donohoe, Hugh Grant, Catherine Oxenberg, Peter Capaldi, Sammi Davis
directed by: Ken Russell
April 24, 1991

It's hard to imagine in these days of stomach-turning gore and mega-violence, just how contentious and controversial Ken Russell films were, back in the day.
He's stated in interviews that all his films are comedies, and you can take him at his word on that, but critics just don't get it. He hit one with a rolled up newspaper on a tv show, which prompted the self-same critic (and renowned Russell-basher) to famously proclaim in print "Get me an elephant gun, this man must be stopped!"
It's easy to see why these people detest Russell. He's been goading them for decades. Taking money from the ever-so-worthy British film industry and making mad tragi-comic films about VERY serious and highbrow composers and artists, taking drugs, getting drunk, taking their ... Read More:
