The 1932 film "Red Dust," the first cinematic pairing of platinum blonde Jean Harlow and the virile Clark Gable, is obviously inspired by the success of Somerset Maugham's "Rain." Once again we have a fallen woman, Vantine Jefferson (Harlow), a Saigon prostitute, running from the police who hides out on an Indo-China rubber plantation run by an unshaven Dennis Carson (Gable). Harlow's character talks tough, but she is a sizzling sexpot (this is the film where she takes a bath in a rain barrel). Gable had achieved stardom by slapping around Norma Shearer in "A Free Soul," and he gives Harlow's character the same sort of treatment. She sasses him back while vamping like crazy. Soon he falls for her and tries to get her to accept money so she can ... Read More:

"It Happened One Night" is one of the most enduring of romantic comedies. Released in 1934, its black and white images are iconic - Gable & Goddard hitching is a classic scene, but there are many others from the film which have an unforgettable cachet. Set against the realities of the Depression, Frank Capra delivers a distinct feel-good quality; this was a film which attracted a huge popular audience.
Claudette Colbert plays a beautiful heiress who has married a lounge-lizard society type against the wishes of her father. Father keeps daughter locked up on his yacht while he pursues nullification of the marriage, but Colbert escapes and sets off on a bus ride back to her husband in New York. She has never done anything so ... Read More:

As the story opens, Roslyn (Marilyn Monroe) has just arrived in Reno to get a quickie divorce. She meets Guido (Eli Wallach), a sensitive mechanic and his pal Gay (Clark Gable), an aging cowboy. Both men fall in love with the beautiful, child-like blonde, and she ends up living with Gay in Guido's house. The men take Roslyn out the desert to go "mustangin'," but she's horrified when she learns the purpose of their trip.
This story is about four aimless and rather pathetic people who have nothing to do and no place to do it in. They're just drifting through life and for a short time, they drift together. Gable is outstanding as the rugged old cowpoke who still wants a woman's touch. He takes manly command of every scene and is charisma personified. Wallach's ... Read More:

With a straight-ahead, no-nonsense approach by famous director Robert Wise, and with strong performances by Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster, and a satisfying number of battle sequences, this movie is a very good war movie.
Lancaster plays the newly appointed captain of the submarine, Gable plays a desk bound officer who'd had his ship shot out from under him a year earlier and wrangles a command on Lancaster's sub.
Any movie starring Lancaster and Gable (which gratefully acknowledges the cooperation of the United States Navy) is going to take a potentially explosive chain-of-command conflict less seriously than will its audience. Something has to keep us glued to our seats between the "Dive! Dive!" and "Fire torpedo two" scenes.
I have to disagree with Amazon's review of this amazing film. To say the film simply isn't there is ludicrous. This is one those films you watched by accident on BBC2 during a rainy Saturday afternoon and never forgot. Trevor Howard is ice cold as the notorious Captain Bligh with Marlon Brando as the self styled Fletcher Christian with, in my opinion, a near flawless English accent and gushing with wit and charisma. Although the running time is a whopping 178 minutes, it's a very short three hours. It's absorbing from the very beginning and just makes you wonder how they made such a massive picture. The aspect ratio is annotated as 2.40:1 but it looks more like 2.70:1. I've never seen anything like it. If you love high adventure, sharp-dialogue, amazing visuals and a fine cast then ...
