Yes this version takes liberties with the book, cutting away much of the historical detail. But it works (or I am a philistine) allowing dramatic licence to hold sway over historical accuracy (the book is overly long anyway, and would have benefitted from some serious editing). I remember watching this as a little girl one winter's afternoon and thinking how impossibly romantic. It really brings to life the story and the sense of wildness that surrounds Exmoor.
This is far superior to the recent BBC version--with its lacklustre protaganists and little chemistry between the leads. Here the romance sparks, we have a headstrong and wilful Lorna, willing to risk her very life to be with John-- far better than Amelia Warner's pitifully ... Read More:

This was obviously a play-to-film translation that underwent no adaptation whatsoever. The dialogue was hammy and forced, and the acting either overblown to the point of disbelief and disconnection. Frankly, thought Owen was terrible in this. And Jagger....ach, don't ask. I appreciate the theme of the film, and there were moments where it almost achieved something close to harrowing. Yet more wholesale buggery of english history. This film is very poor and should make any person with even the slightest knowledge of the real King Arthur cringe with shame. Bad acting, bad direction.

A good stylish film, with one error. The plot doesn't work, I can't explain how without ruining the film entirely, and believe it or not the fact it doesn't work does not ruin the film. The film's about style and not substance, and it achieves that with panache- even if the cinematography is a little obviously derivative at points.
