VHS : Brother Bear [2003]

Brother Bear [2003]

starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Jeremy Suarez, Rick Moranis, Jason Raize, Dave Thomas
directed by: Aaron Blaise, Robert Walker
May 10, 2004

Brother Bear is a wonderful animation - it isn't violent and it has the right balance between comedy and drama. The storyline is engaging and the characters and some of the cameos in this film are hysterical. This is a film for all the family and it is a truly wonderful children's animation combined with Phil Collins' musicianship that brings the film to life. Highly enjoyable.

VHS : Lonesome Dove - Parts 1, 2 And 3 [1988]

Lonesome Dove - Parts 1, 2 And 3 [1988]

starring: Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Danny Glover, Diane Lane, Robert Urich
directed by: Simon Wincer
June 22, 1992

One of the great Westerns, albeit this time on the small screen not the large, this is a movie about aging in a decent way. As much as the characters age, this is also a pivotal time for the genre of the Western itself, predicting the rise of the revisionist Westerns (Dances with Wolves, Unforgiven et al) at a time when no-one was interested in Westerns at all. As such, the message of growing old in the face of adversity while keeping values intact is striking and as relevant as ever.
So what makes it work? First, the epic scope of Larry McMurty's book which fits 6 hours of television so much better than it would have squeezed into a theatrical movie. It breathes, takes its time and introduces characters in what at first feels a long drawn out ... Read More:

VHS : Eight Men Out [1988]

Eight Men Out [1988]

starring: John Cusack, Clifton James, Michael Lerner, Christopher Lloyd, John Mahoney
directed by: John Sayles
October 09, 2000

Okay - I admit it. I bought this solely because Cusack was in it. I have compiled his back catalogue which has lead me to watching a number of films I would not have even considered normally - but luckily even his early Brat-Pack-esque offerings are surprisingly watchable (I'm choosing to gloss over 'One Crazy Summer' because Demi Moore's presence in many films of that genre is an unfortunate fact of life)and so I came to watch 'Eight Men Out'. This is not a film that will change your life, but it does do what any film should which is ENTERTAIN. It does so intelligently, basing the plot on an account of the 1919 Chicago White Sox scandal (baseballers were fixing matches long before cricket cottoned on to the idea, it seems)- but you do not have to care much about turn ... VHS : Fire In The Sky [1993]

Fire In The Sky [1993]

starring: D.B. Sweeney, Robert Patrick, Craig Sheffer, Peter Berg, Henry Thomas
directed by: Robert Lieberman
September 05, 1994

The fact that this is based upon a true story, full of factual events makes the film very compelling. Overall the film could be considered laborious and a bit dull in parts but when you think, yeah this actually could have happened takes the feel of the film to a whole new level.

Travis and his friends are coming back from a days logging when they see a mysterius light in the woods, keen to investigate Travis approaches the light after getting out of the truck leaving all his friends behind, when a beam of light shoots down and knocks travis to the ground, his friends speed off fearing for their life and that is the last time travis is seen for days, accused of murder by police and locals travis's friends have to tell their rather unbelieveable story.

Spawn [1997]

starring: Michael Jai White, John Leguizamo, Martin Sheen, Theresa Randle, Nicol Williamson
directed by: Mark A.Z. Dippé
July 13, 1998

So if you take one of the greatest comics created and make it into a feature film surely you will have one of the best adaptations right? definately wrong!!!
this unfortunately did not do justice to the comics and spawn series! as a major fan i heard mixed reviews but decided to buy it especially as it is cheaper now.
to be fair the acting in Spawn is good and they have got most of the characters likeness spot on! but the script was very badly written and the actors would have a hard time making anyone believe any of it!
I also believe if spawn had better CGI it would have been much more enjoyable. but most of the CGI made me think i was watching an epsiode of charmed.
i did enjoy the first half of the film and they are some parts i think was ok, ... Read More:
