Matilda was originally written as a children¡¦s novel by Roald Dahl (tales of the unexpected) in 1988. His wry wit and humour certainly makes the book an enjoyable read and this humour still shows in Danny DeVito¡¦s movie version of the novel with a contrast of both American and English actors.
The film is about a young girl called Matilda played wonderfully by Mara Wilson (Miss Doubtfire). Though at the time, Wilson was fairly new to the acting scene; her acting skills still comes across as charming.
Another great actor in the film is the director, Danny DeVito (Mars Attacks), who also plays both the narrator and Matilda¡¦s father. DeVito is both ... Read More:

I love DeVito and I'm an unconditional fan of Michael Douglas, but this film is totally uninteresting. What a bore. Husband and wife fight stupid for the whole film, and in-between scenes you see DeVito puff on his cigarettes, making a big thing out of it. Exciting isn't it? uh, maybe not... There's no special bound between the characters, DeVito and Douglas characters are not even friends or anything, so the fact that he seams to care is not even believable - well, the same is true for the spectator to be honest. I pass on the fact that the direction is technically outdated. Nothing else to report. I give it 2 stars for the actors which I love, but frankly this is a waste of two hours.

Curtis Hanson has managed to direct a film which captures the late 1940's in both style and spirit. Often films depicting the glamourous side of this era immerse themselves too much in the styles and fashions of the time, rendering the actual characters superfluous to the movie. Not here though - the characters drive the film, blending in perfectly with the directing style swaying effortlessly to capture the gritty and the classic-Hollywoodesque, the guy has done his homework.
Risks were taken by casting relatively unknown non-Americans in the two major roles, a rare thing by a Hollywood studio. It's hard to imagine anyone else but Russell Crowe as the fiery `Bud' and at times Guy Pierce seems a bit awkward as `Exley' - but this isn't a flaw in his ... Read More:

What I extremely like about "Batman" (1989) bounces back again in "Batman Returns": schizophrenic characters (in "Batman" there were at least two super-schizophrenics - I shouldn't name them, should I? - but here there are distinctive three of them), enchanting atmosphere (the sets are beautiful, "gothically" menacing, and simply outstanding), cool acting (when I say "cool acting" I mean my absolute inability to poke finger at the characters with disrespect and contempt; quite the other way round: I do respect all the characters here, while they are never goofy, stupid, or over-sentimental), great action scenes (fighting against the hordes of clowns, great acrobatic stunts - I am especially happy with that scene where clowns are jumping onto the Xmas tree and bring ... This film could have been so much better than it was. Not that it's a bad film at all - it's quite beautifully shot, all the roles are played with ease and admirable understatement, and it's played out to a hazy backing track that matches the adolescent yearnings of the characters perfectly. Most of the ingredients are there and the film is certainly easy on the eye and extremely watchable. Yet at the end, I was left with a dissatisfyingly unsubstantial impression as to what the film meant. Why did these teenage girls committ suicide and why did I care so little? A little more imaginative crafting of the script might have enabled this film to say something more tangible about the nature of adolescence, virginity or the reasons for teenage suicide. The few attempts to do so that ... Read More:
