What an utter surprise. I expected a dated sci fi flick that had not stood the test of time but I was wrong. This is an exceedingly moving and thought provoking film. It is also the first film in a long time that moved me to tears (anyone who has watched it will know which part I am referring to). It is utterly compelling. Much of the style and imagery may seem familiar at first, until you realise it is because it has been copied by more recent sci fi films. Watch this, it is an original.

In the first of Ron Howard's and Tom Hanks' collaborations, Hanks stars as Allen Bauer, an unlucky in love man who travels to Cape Cod, where he meets a beautiful woman, who has a secret, she is a mermaid.
In perhaps a forgotten gem of the 80's, Howard delivers a heart warming tale about one man and his unlucky in love life, and how the extraordinary can bring out the hearts desires in a truly good funny and ultimately tale.

I don't understand the hype about this movie at all - or about any Tarantino film that is. I got the impression a 12-year-old wrote and directed it! The worst part about it: it is OVERLY CHEESY! Although probably intended that way, it totally ruined the film for me. Yes, many Asian films are cheesy, but in this one it simply doesn't fit.
The excellent acting by most of the cast is wasted. A really good fighting scene at the end doesn't save it either.
Being a revenge movie you will have to compare it to others of that genre - namely "Ms. 45 / Angel of Vengeance" and doing so KILL BILL simply doesn't stand a chance. KILL BILL is simply a motion picture comic book, a farce. The characters are so unbelievably ridiculous - a Japanese schoolgirl as a ... Read More:

This movie has an unusually deep moral sense. It also has an unusual respect for each of its characters, including the Indians - and the jungle.
I finally read the book a few years ago and loved it. The movie somehow was able to convey a similar feeling despite not being able to delve into the thoughts of the characters in the way that the book did. These are two closely related but fully independent works of art. It's rare to find a book and its movie that complement each other so well. Great writing on the one hand, great acting on the other.
Because the Indians are treated with respect, even though they are clearly playing roles that fit perfectly into the movie, this movie seems to reveal more about them than any documentary I've seen. It's a ... Read More:

Peter O'Toole is hysterical in this film, and quite easily, is the glue that holds it together (contrary to popular opinion). While this film suffers its share of problems, (such as a few holes in the plot, a little shoddy acting here and there) it makes me laugh as few other movies have. O'Toole's drunken wisdom and fights with his drunken, ghost-talking mother are great. Steve Guttenberg does fine, Daryl Hannah is okay. The Irish country side is lovelyand haunting (incidentally, the movie was filmed in a castle in Limerick,Ireland, where Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes grew up); the set ofthe castle itself is the stuff that fairy tales are made of. The effort that the staff makes to haunt the cynical guests is great, in particular the Lady Godiva/Broggan Banshee ... Read More:

Do you think grumpy is natural? Think again. Learn from the experts, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. They really make an odd couple" Odd Couple II, The - Neil Simon's" (1998). Who knew they could just get grumpier. And a new cutie has been added to the mix for this second in the grumpy series.
Usually with a remake you either loose some of the original zing or regardless of how good it is just not the same (nostalgia factor). Well this time you are in for a treat. The original was improved on and it is a positive exaggeration of the TV program. I am not sure that a talking suit really adds to the movie. However it does not distract.
All the original characters are in the movie and some added characters to round it off. I appreciated the method used buy Coleye (Wallace Shawn) to test for alien residue. By the way if his first name was Ernest, he could be "E. Coleye." Jeff Daniels made a believable Tim O'Hara. And it was a nice touch to put the late Ray Walston (the original Martian) in this picture as the investigator.
I have watched this film many, many times over the years and it's still as great as the first time I watched it. A superstar cast brings with it quality acting and a superb script. Don't think I've ever watched it without crying, so if you're a Steel Magnolias virgin, or coming back to it for a repeat viewing - be sure to have the tissues at the ready....
It also has one of my all-time favourite quotes, which is something I live by...
"I'd rather have one moment of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special" - simply beautiful!
Obviously if you like your no-brainer action car-chase movies, this isn't for you. If you want a simple story of lives and friendships, beautifully written and flawless performances, with depth and character - this is essential viewing.
