VHS : Cry Freedom [1987]

Cry Freedom [1987]

starring: Denzel Washington, Kevin Kline, Josette Simon, Wabei Siyolwe, John Matshikiza
directed by: Richard Attenborough
July 01, 1999

An awesome soundtrack that served it's unique inspiration on many levels. I made love to my first girlfriend to this ebullient South African anthem. There is a moment when the choir raises the skies with, Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika ("Lord bless Africa")Maluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo ("May her spirit rise high up ")Yizwa imithandazo yethu. ("Hear thou our prayers ")Nkosi sikelela Thina lusapho lwayo. ("Lord bless us, Your people."). Unfortunately, the album does not date very well, and there are many others and better on the theme, but this is still special and truly a work of genius. Ironically, the film itself does not do the soundtrack honest justice

VHS : Fallen [1998]

Fallen [1998]

starring: Denzel Washington, John Goodman, Donald Sutherland, Embeth Davidtz, James Gandolfini
directed by: Gregory Hoblit
May 31, 1999

Denzil Washington stars in this high class chiller in which he plays a cop trying to deal with an opponent who could literally be anybody at any time. A good cast including John Goodman and Donald Sutherland provide excellent support. Combine this with a surprisingly clever script and decent direction and you'll find a film that thrills and surprises in equal measures. No more so than the ending which has a lovely twist which I certainly didn't see coming.

Fortunately for us there is no basis in reality for this story. If there was you'd look at people a little bit differently in future. Its also worth mentioning that I shall never hear a certain Rolling Stones song in the same way again after watching this film.

VHS : Glory [1990]

Glory [1990]

starring: Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, Morgan Freeman, Jihmi Kennedy
directed by: Edward Zwick
July 01, 2002

A rousing story about a black platoon facing prejudice and annilation during the American civil war. Matthew Broderick's finest performance as the leader of the first all black regiment fighting the confederates and racism from their own Union army. Supported by the fine Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. The plight of these brave men will emotionally move you, possibly to tears, although mine was more of a controlled welling, though my lower lip did quiver when the credits rolled.

He Got Game [1998]

starring: Denzel Washington, Milla Jovovich, Ray Allen, Rosario Dawson, Hill Harper
directed by: Spike Lee

(yahoo review) :
Denzel Washington does some of his best work as a prison inmate trying to earn himself an early release by talking his estranged son into playing basketball at the governor of New York's alma mater.
My review :
I gave this film 5 stars for its brilliant acting and gritty, real atmosphere. It is about a young basketball player (played by nba star ray allen) whos father is sent to prison for accidentally killing his mother, his father (denzel washington) is then told by his warden that he can get him out of prison if can pursuede his son to play for the wardens favorite college basketball team. For anyone has a faint interest in basketball or is a fan of this genre, i would advise seeing this film. It is clever, touching and a engaging ... Read More:

VHS : Training Day [2002]

Training Day [2002]

starring: Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Scott Glenn, Tom Berenger, Harris Yulin
directed by: Antoine Fuqua
July 15, 2002

Stunning movie - easily the best American urban/police thriller I've seen to date!
VERY stylish and often brutal, this hooks from start to finish.
It's not action packed, rather delivering thrills in short, sharp bursts. It's very atmospheric with an incredible central performance from Denzel Washington as antihero/villain, Detective Alonzo Harris, and strong support from Ethan Hawke as rookie officer, Jake Hoyt.
Look out for small roles from the likes of Snoop Dogg & Dr Dre, in this unflinching portrayal of the very mean streets of LA. Also, Scott Glen, Cliff Curtis & Tom Berenger. It's a real tough guys movie BUT not in the cliched action roles that we saw back in the '80s.
The direction from Antoine Fuqua is extremeley tight, and the ... Read More:

The Preacher's Wife [1997]

starring: Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston, Courtney B. Vance, Gregory Hines, Jenifer Lewis
directed by: Penny Marshall
June 04, 2001

This is a great movie with great actors. Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington teamed together in a beautiful comedy... They both did a great job as actors, but Whitney singing gospel is just phenomenal. A great movie for your soul (because of the music)

VHS : Mo' Better Blues [1990]

Mo' Better Blues [1990]

starring: Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, Wesley Snipes, Giancarlo Esposito, Robin Harris
directed by: Spike Lee
July 01, 1999

This is among the most artistic and aesthetically brilliant films. Written and directed by Spike Lee, the film marked Lee's first collaboration with Denzel Washington who plays the fictional jazz trumpeter Bleek Gilliam. Also starring Lee and his regulars John Turturro, Giancarlo Esposito, Wesley Snipes, Joie Lee, Bill Nunn, and Samuel L. Jackson plus Cynda Williams, Robin Harris, and Charlie Murphy. Mo' Better Blues is a brilliant, passionate love letter to jazz and music in all of its chaos.

I find this film rather cool and sexy. Lee and DP Ernest Dickerson use the camera in the same way that Michelangelo used a chisel to transform ugly chunks of rocks into beautiful hands and feet. Spike and Dickerson always delight and amaze me with the way the use that ... Read More:
