VHS : Footlight Parade [1933]

Footlight Parade [1933]

starring: James Cagney, Joan Blondell, Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell, Frank McHugh
directed by: Lloyd Bacon

This is one fast paced musical. The plot is silly but interesting for a bit of movie history about prologues, the musical numbers are great (By a Waterfall and Shanghai Lil are Busby Berkeley spectacle at its best) and the movie is stuffed full of good character actors. Watching James Cagney in this movie makes you wish he had made more musicals as he is as sharp and snappy a dancer as he is an actor. He and Joan Blondell get most of the good one liners and have very good chemistry. It is easy to see why they were teamed together so often.

VHS : The Bad And The Beautiful [1952]

The Bad And The Beautiful [1952]

starring: Lana Turner, Kirk Douglas, Walter Pidgeon, Dick Powell, Barry Sullivan
directed by: Vincente Minnelli
February 19, 2001

`The Bad And The Beautiful' (1952) was directed by Vincente Minnelli between two of his greatest and best loved musicals `The Bandwagon' (1951) and `An American In Paris' (1953). He had directed other great films such as `Meet Me In St. Louis' (1944) and `Father Of The Bride' (1950) before attempting his dramatic take on the Hollywood Studio system. Making films about Hollywood was nothing new when Minnelli made `The Bad And the Beautiful'. Only a couple years earlier there was `All About Eve' (1950), `Sunset Boulevard' (1950) and `A Star Is Born' in 1937. This may be part of the reason why this film is not so highly regarded, however there are other reasons too.

The fact that `The Bad And The Beautiful' is regarded as film noir ... Read More:

VHS : Abbott And Costello - In The Navy [1941]

Abbott And Costello - In The Navy [1941]

starring: Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Dick Powell, Claire Dodd, Patty Andrews
directed by: Arthur Lubin
January 27, 2003

Abbott & Costello follow up their success in "Buck Privates" with another service comedy, "In the Navy," also directed by Arthur Lubin. Russ Raymond (Dick Powell), the top crooner on the radio, abandons his career and joins the Navy under the name Tommy Halstead. He is assigned to the U.S.S. Alabama, where he meets up with Smoky Adams (Abbott) and Pomeroy Watson (Costello), and they all have to endure Chief Petty Officer Dynamite Dugan (Dick Foran). The two main story lines here have to do with romance. Young newspaper photographer Dorothy Roberts (Claire Dodd) sneaks on board to get candid photos of "Tommy," and they fall in love. Meanwhile, Pomeroy has been writing love letters to Patty Andrews of the Andrews Sisters, saying he is an officer ... Read More:

VHS : Gold Diggers of 1935 [1935] [1962]

Gold Diggers of 1935 [1935] [1962]

starring: Dick Powell, Adolphe Menjou, Gloria Stuart
directed by: Busby Berkeley

'Gold Diggers of 1933' is one of my favourite films. It has a good storyline, great actors, witty one-liners, fabulous music and terrific dance numbers. 'Gold Diggers of 1935' is such a disappointment as it is not a patch on its predecessor.

I can be easily drawn in by a filmsy plot if the story and characters are engaging but unfortunately this was not the case with '1935'. While the charming Dick Powell does his job well, he really does need Ruby Keeler, Joan Blondell or one of the other main actors from '1933', 'Footlight Parade' or '42nd Street' to give this film some pep. The only reason I gave this film 3 stars is due to the fantastic 'Lullaby of Broadway' and 'The Words Are In My Heart' numbers.

VHS : Farewell My Lovely [1944]

Farewell My Lovely [1944]

starring: Dick Powell, Claire Trevor, Anne Shirley, Otto Kruger, Mike Mazurki
directed by: Edward Dmytryk
August 10, 1998

This one of my favorite movies. Years ago I rented a VHS of it and made a dupe at home. The quality was lousy but I liked it and played it often, but I learned my lession about making unauthorized copies. My daughter's puppy urinated all over the tape. This movie is so good it even survived that.

This is classic noir, with Phillip Marlowe. The plot is about stolen jade, hidden identities, blackmail, love, treachery and murder. The story is complicated, the casting is great, the photography and voice-over narration carry things along. It has style. The ending is satisfying. And the dialogue is some of the best ever written.

Powell broke through into serious roles with this film. Even in all the singing roles he had up to this movie ... Read More:
