VHS : Steel Magnolias [1990]

Steel Magnolias [1990]

starring: Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Daryl Hannah
directed by: Herbert Ross
July 01, 2002

I have watched this film many, many times over the years and it's still as great as the first time I watched it. A superstar cast brings with it quality acting and a superb script. Don't think I've ever watched it without crying, so if you're a Steel Magnolias virgin, or coming back to it for a repeat viewing - be sure to have the tissues at the ready....
It also has one of my all-time favourite quotes, which is something I live by...
"I'd rather have one moment of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special" - simply beautiful!

Obviously if you like your no-brainer action car-chase movies, this isn't for you. If you want a simple story of lives and friendships, beautifully written and flawless performances, with depth ... Read More:

VHS : Dolly Parton - Blue Valley Songbird [2004]

Dolly Parton - Blue Valley Songbird [2004]

starring: Dolly Parton, John Terry, Billy Dean, Beth Grant, Kimberley Kates
directed by: Richard A. Colla
July 02, 2001

Dolly Parton dons a red version of her familiar "big hair" to play Leanna Taylor, a struggling singer who never quite made it big...(In show business, that is.) Leanna learns that before she can get on with her future, she has to deal with her past. She learns to deal greatly through music. With the help of fellow country crooner Billy Dean, Dolly spices this movie with great love songs and tender performances. A sure winner for anyone who likes good music, good fun, and the wonderful Parton.

Big Dreams And Broken Hearts [1995]

starring: Michele Lee, Chet Atkins, David James Elliott, Larry Gatlin, Kris Kristofferson
directed by: Bill D'Elia
July 22, 1996

This routine biopic of Country music legend Dottie West is O.K. - apart from the fact that the VOICE, SOUL & PASSION are missing. To be fair, I think her unique qualities were just too subtle to capture on film.

Michele Lee, playing the star, comes over as a cross between (in her early scenes with Patsy Cline) Mae West and (later) Tina Turner, with little of the tenderness, not to mention emotional scars that must have existed (following the tragic childhood abuse at the hands of her father).

The best scene for me is the studio recording of EVERY TIME TWO FOOLS COLLIDE, with Kenny Rogers, but, even here, Ms. Lee makes Kenny sound great, whereas, on the record, Dottie makes him sound ordinary.

For fans of Dottie West, ... Read More:

As a huge Dolly Fan I bought these tapes hoping to see interviews etc...with Dolly. What I got was about 25 minutes of letterboxed tv interviews where Dolly's head was sometimes cut off. These tapes are nothing but cheap ways of making money off real fans. I guarantee that if you buy these tapes you will be returning them in the second post and demanding the same satisfaction as me...

This is a great film funny and entertaining, lighthearted and romantic, not to be taken seriously. Good music, good story, a real feel good romantic comedy, Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton are both great in the lead roles. Well worth watching.
