VHS : Monte Carlo or Bust [1969]

Monte Carlo or Bust [1969]

starring: Tony Curtis, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Susan Hampshire, Jack Hawkins
July 15, 1996

Peter Cook and Dudley Moore are only two of the galaxy of stars who all have great parts in this classic 60's comedy about the famous car rally across Europe. Tony Curtis, Terry Thomas, Eric Sykes, Susan Hampshire and Gert Frobel all have dirty tricks up their sleeves to be first across the line as they face the hazards of the frozen North, the Alps etc. "Pete n' Dud" appear as two maniac Army officers in what is my favourite of all their performances. This film is the real story of the 60's cartoon serial "The Wacky Races" and you will recognise the Dick Dastardly character immediately as Terry Thomas (and Eric Sykes, the sneaky butler who translates brilliantly as "Mutley, The Snickering Hound" in "The Wacky Races"!) The media coverage of ... Read More:

VHS : The Plank [1967]

The Plank [1967]

starring: Tommy Cooper, Eric Sykes, Jimmy Edwards, Roy Castle, Graham Stark
directed by: Eric Sykes
June 01, 1992

'The Plank' is an absolute classic, funny, hilarious. I have watched it umpteen times and I still find myself lying on the floor, laughing my butts off when I watch it again. I like to show it to my students in English lesson to demonstrate 'British humour', and then I sit in my corner finding it ravingly funny. My (German) students are mostly mildly interested. 'The Plank' obviously is British humour that does not offer its virtues to German teenagers at once. At least I had an enjoyable lesson, ain't that important ? I am now ordering a new copy since my old one is wearing out.

Teletubbies - Musical Playtime [1997]

starring: Rolf Saxon, John Simmit, Nikky Smedley, Pui Fan Lee, Tim Whitnall
directed by: David Hiller
September 06, 1999

I am Mum to a very lively 20 month old daughter who loves the Teletubbies. This is one of the best videos we have as she will watch it from start to finish without losing interest, and even though she now knows what comes next on the tape she wants it on over any other video in the house. It has taught her to sing along with Tinky Winky, Dipsy, La-La & Po, and this in return now keeps me entertained! This really is a great video for toddlers.

VHS : The Bargee [1964]

The Bargee [1964]

starring: Harry H. Corbett, Hugh Griffith, Eric Sykes, Ronnie Barker, Julia Foster
directed by: Duncan Wood
April 21, 2003

Harry H. Corbett has always been a favourite of mine; he was a fine and talented actor. Alongside Ronnie Barker and Eric Sykes, set on the canals of England, it would be difficult to find a better setting. An excellent supporting cast, a witty and moral story, I was surprised at how pleasing and enjoyable this film turned out to be.

If you want a fun film, with beautiful settings, the feel and romance of "Old" England, this has to be a must watch. I never tire of it, especially the happy ending!

Teletubbies - Hide And Seek Video [1997]

starring: Rolf Saxon, John Simmit, Nikky Smedley, Pui Fan Lee, Tim Whitnall
directed by: David Hiller
July 22, 2002

I think that all young kids should love this. Both my kids a 1 year old and a 3 year old, keep watching it again and again. Babies and toddlers love to hide and seek things, love to be discovered when they are hiding and like the fact to anticipate what is going to happen next. The tubbies keep hiding and missing and the others have to find them. My children keep shouting: she is there, there........

Teletubbies And The Snow [1997]

starring: Rolf Saxon, John Simmit, Nikky Smedley, Pui Fan Lee, Tim Whitnall
directed by: David Hiller
October 11, 1999

Since getting this video out of our local library on loan one week, my 21 month old daughter has been totally addicted! Having failed to find it in local video and DVD stores I'm delighted that Amazon were able to supply it for us. My daughter shrieks with excitement as the snow falls, loves the TV excerpts and loves to sing along with the children from Finland - language is no barrier to a toddler! But the best bit of all is when the tubbies make a snowtubby - she dances round the room with excitement. A must for all teletubbie fans

VHS : Shalako [1969]

Shalako [1969]

starring: Sean Connery, Brigitte Bardot, Stephen Boyd, Jack Hawkins, Peter van Eyck
directed by: Edward Dmytryk
February 26, 1996

I don't know if inept, snotty Euro-Aristos actually went on safaris in the middle of the Old West, but if you can get by that particular set-up, the rest of the film is pretty enjoyable, with good action scenes, lovely scenery well photographed, and a likeable cast giving value for money.

There have been complaints that Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot fail to Ignite The Screen--instead, they display a likeable, low-key camaderie as an indian scout and a titled Frenchwoman who's a lot faster on the uptake than most of her companions--crude sex appeal gives way to something more realistic and appealing. Bardot forgoes pouting and wriggling and is all the more likeable for it (1968 was also the year of her excellent cameo ... Read More:
