VHS : Trainspotting [1996]

Trainspotting [1996]

starring: Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, Robert Carlyle
directed by: Danny Boyle
July 12, 2004

as someone from Edinburgh who lived and went to plenty of the places mentioned in Trainspotting i have to say read the book the book instead which has the full content and message rather than just a comic short hand for what was happening at the time. It made fashionista fools think that taking hard drugs was a nice activity and gave them kudos and brought in too many people too Edinburgh looking for that lifestyle.
I have never managed it all the way through and think it is just an alternative advert for Britain for the naively trendy or people who misguided enough to think that the pathos and dark humor wasn't there to balance the story...great cast though and on the whole well acted but an overrated footnote to late 90's Britain

Lipstick On Your Collar [1993]

starring: Giles Thomas, Ewan McGregor, Louise Germaine, Peter Jeffrey, Clive Francis
March 15, 1993

I agree with the last reviewer. This is a series which I made a point of watching. The faultless cast includes a young Ewan McGregor and the excellent Roy Hudd. It must be over 10 years since I've seen it and I'd like to watch it again. Shame there is no DVD release as yet.

starring: Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, Pernilla August
directed by: George Lucas

OK where to start on this truly horrific crime of a film?

Jar Jar Binks may actually be the worst character in the history of cinema - all those animators and actors who worked to realise this affront to human decency should find a revolver and do the decent thing.

Why do all American kids have problems talking properly? Do they think that speaking like a cutesy 3 year old makes them endearing? Jake whatshisname (Anakin) should never ever be allowed in front of a camera again.

Who came up with the 'story'? My ship is broken, want to come with us, Kid? Seems to be about it.

Also,Why is it that in 'attack of the clones' Anakin has aged about ten years, but Padme is (amazingly) about 3 years older than she ... Read More:

VHS : Brassed Off [1996]

Brassed Off [1996]

starring: Pete Postlethwaite, Tara Fitzgerald, Ewan McGregor, Stephen Tompkinson, Jim Carter
directed by: Mark Herman
September 06, 1999

Channel Four developed Brassed Off and The Full Monty at the same time. A man called David Aukin, I think had to decide which to make. He could only choose one, so he chose Brassed Off.

Although The Full Monty is an excellent film he made the right choice as Brassed Off is more complex with a greater insight into the problems facing "old" industries in the 1990's in Yorkshire.

Well done Mr Aukin and everyone who worked on this brilliant film.

Velvet Goldmine [1998]

starring: Ewan McGregor, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Christian Bale, Toni Collette, Eddie Izzard
directed by: Todd Haynes
September 04, 2000

I realy expected to enjoy this, I grew up with glam rock, usually enjoy Ewan Macgregor and think Todd Haynes is a good director. But I was seriously dissapointed.

The editing is terrible, depriving the film of any structure, there are no characters to engage with and thirty or so minutes in I hit the stop button after watching Ewan deliver the most feeble Iggy Pop impersonation I have ever seen.

Haynes wraps the whole thing into some concete with Oscar Wilde & spaceships which helps not one bit. An utterly pointless waste of talent and time.
