VHS : Ghost Of St Michaels [1941]

Ghost Of St Michaels [1941]

starring: Will Hay, Claude Hulbert, Charles Hawtrey, Raymond Huntley, Felix Aylmer
directed by: Marcel Varnel
September 20, 1999

Bright and cheery wartime comedy, in which the boisterous lads of St Michaels are evacuated to a remote castle on the Isle Of Skye. Of course the place is haunted (and being Scotland, it naturally has to be a phantom piper whose appearance foretells doom to any who hear him), but it also comes complete with a Nazi spying ring. Will Hay is on top bumbling form as science teacher Mr Lamb, who gets Isaac Newton confused with William Tell, and he gets able support from a young and exuberant Charles Hawtrey, and John Laurie doing his wild-eyed mad Scotsman routine. Fast-paced, and quite atmospheric in its gothic Scottish castle setting. Nothing creaky about this comedy.

Quo Vadis [1952]

starring: Robert Taylor, Deborah Kerr, Leo Genn, Peter Ustinov, Patricia Laffan
directed by: Anthony Mann, Mervyn LeRoy
February 19, 2001

I love it. From all the epics made in Hollywood it has the best script. I don't know another one that makes me laugh. This one truly has a good sense of humor and sarcasm. Not to forget the story about love, hate, courage - simply everything that makes a good movie. The actors are great - no one will forget Peter Ustinov's performance, and Robert Taylor - here he is not only as handsome as a man can be, his acting is also fine with a good sense of irony, great professionalism, topped by a very charming appearance.

VHS : The Black Sheep Of Whitehall [1942]

The Black Sheep Of Whitehall [1942]

starring: Will Hay, John Mills, Basil Sydney, Henry Hewitt, Felix Aylmer
directed by: Will Hay, Basil Dearden
October 08, 2001

This film is a joy from begginning to end. The attepts to rescue a kidnapped scientist never fail to be funny. Will Hay's perfomance as the incompetent head of a correspondence college who gets drawn into the plot is wonderful and John Mills gives great support. This is a film that anybody can enjoy, the humour appeals to all age groups and despite the age of the film it never seems stale.

Henry V [1944]

starring: Laurence Olivier, Robert Newton, Leslie Banks, Felix Aylmer, Robert Helpmann
directed by: Laurence Olivier

I first saw this film in 1963 - it has been with me ever since. There can be many intepretations of the play - there does not have to be a "best". This one is just essential.

VHS : Exodus [1960]

Exodus [1960]

starring: Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint, Ralph Richardson, Peter Lawford, Lee J. Cobb
directed by: Otto Preminger
March 20, 2000

It isn't the best made film in the world; it is melodramatic and not particularly accurate historically, the characters are rather stereotypical and Hollywoodish, but I first saw it when I was 15 and it moved me so much that five years later, in 1967, in the middle of the Six Day War, I packed a small bag and went to live in Israel. Indeed "Exodus" is pro-Israel; why shouldn't it be?

VHS : Separate Tables - Plus The Original Theatrical Trailer [1958]

Separate Tables - Plus The Original Theatrical Trailer [1958]

starring: Rita Hayworth, Deborah Kerr, David Niven, Burt Lancaster, Wendy Hiller
directed by: Delbert Mann
September 18, 2000

This is a movie centred around a marvellous story.

David Niven plays a 'fake' Major. This is because he hides a secret past which is about to become public knowledge at a small Hotel where he has been staying some time. He is 'sweet' on a 'spinster-ish' woman (Deborah Kerr) who's dominated by her possessive mother (Gladys Cooper) There are other stories within this picture, but the story between 'The Major' and 'Sybil' is by far the most touching and absorbing. There are some wonderful scenes in this, and David Niven gives an outstanding performance and gets much sympathy from the Viewer.

This film not only shows how cruel and judgmental people can be, but how the best can be brought out after their shame ... Read More:

The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp [1943]

starring: Anton Walbrook, Deborah Kerr, Roger Livesey, Felix Aylmer, A.E.Mathews
March 02, 1998

I will not go into the detail of the film because other reviewers have done such a good job of that but all I can say is this is a classic film which I never tire of watching. It has adventure, a heroe, romance and a story which we see from begining to end. I love this film so much and I always, always shed a tear at the end.

An all time classic.
