VHS : Short Circuit [1986]

Short Circuit [1986]

starring: Ally Sheedy, Steve Guttenberg, Fisher Stevens, Austin Pendleton, G.W. Bailey
directed by: John Badham
April 05, 2004

I must have been eleven years old when I first saw this film, and right from its oddly quirky (and gorgeous) opening music I was hooked.

The idea is not new, nor original. An experimental military robot goes wrong and escapes the institute at which it was built. The institute must then send personell to capture it before it causes any harm. Except that it's not going to cause any harm.

Strategic Artificially Intelligent Nuclear Transport (SAINT) No. 5 is inquisitive, thoughtful and totally unaware that it is a weapon. It thirsts desperately for knowledge, or 'input', and has a penchant for television re-runs, soon befriending Stephanie, a struggling young woman with a rampant habit of taking in stray animals.

starring: Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Samantha Mathis, Fisher Stevens
directed by: Annabel Jankel, Dean Semler, Rocky Morton, Roland Joffé
March 28, 1994

This film without a doubt is one of my all time favourites, i was a fan of the video game, i remember staying over at my cousins when i was 4 and we would play the mario games for hours and when i heard they were makin a film i couldnt wait.

i remember watching this film for the first time and immediatly loved it, the film doesnt keep in touch with the games all that much, but that in no way makes this a bad film, who cares if it doesnt keep to the games, films like that normally suck, may i remind people of resident evil or even mortal combat or recently doom.

the actors in the main roles are pefectly cast, especially bob hoskins and dennis hopper, with great support from john leuizamo and samantha mathis, even iggy and spike ... Read More:

VHS : When Harry Met Sally [1989]

When Harry Met Sally [1989]

starring: Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, Carrie Fisher, Bruno Kirby, Steven Ford
directed by: Rob Reiner
July 23, 2001

'When Harry Met Sally' is fundamentally a chick flick with a 'will they, won't they' storyline and yet it's smart and snappy dialogue elevates it to the classic it has now become. Focusing on the relationship dynamics between men and women and from the perspective of the cynical and jaded Harry (Billy crystal) and the optimistic, slightly naive Sally (Meg Ryan), this film offers so many humorous insights that it literally is one hilarious moment, followed by a touching moment, followed by a strangely insightful moment and then back to a humourous one again. The assorted couples who introduce the various 'chapters' are also completely endearing and add an extra touch to the overall film. This is a short but perfectly pitched movie and coupled with the wonderfully ... Read More:

VHS : Short Circuit 2 [1988]

Short Circuit 2 [1988]

starring: Fisher Stevens, Michael McKean, Tim Blaney, Cynthia Gibb, Jack Weston
directed by: Kenneth Johnson
October 03, 1994

If you read my review for the original Short Circuit, you'll note my memories for what is, a wonderful film. The story with this? Yet another ex-rental buy from Blockbuster! My mum knew just how much I loved the first, and once she saw this sequel in the pile of old videos, I was home to a welcome suprise.. and a dohnut!
Did this sequel live up to the first? In many ways, yes, and in a few others... no. But firstly, whats Johnny 5 up to? Well, after his escape at the end of the first film, he makes his way into the city via an obviously large package, to his original creators. The group bond, and we see J-5's rather humerous encounters as he makes his way through the different aspects of city life - much different to his quiet life hide-out in the first film.

VHS : Nina Takes A Lover [1994]

Nina Takes A Lover [1994]

starring: Laura San Giacomo, Paul Rhys, Michael O'Keefe, Cristi Conaway, Fisher Stevens
directed by: Alan Jacobs
August 11, 1997

Nina Takes A Lover, is almost very interesting. The narration style, and flow of plot is clever. The story itself, isn't terribly winning. However, Laura San Giacomo and Paul Rhys are.

Chemistry is there. Rhys plays the sweet and disarming lover/husband to the hilt. Giacomo is for once, slightly uderstated, restraint almost. These two builds a tension, that doesn't quite explode, and neither does the twist of the movie.

All that said, bare in mind, this is about love and how to make it work, especially when love threatens to fall apart. What are we willing to accept, and can we actually try again. Marriage means something, and we always think ours is that exception. When our marriage starts to get dull, we spice it up. When our marriage isn't perfect in the ... Read More:

VHS : The Burning [1981]

The Burning [1981]

starring: Brian Matthews, Leah Ayres, Brian Backer, Larry Joshua, Jason Alexander
directed by: Tony Maylam
October 16, 2000

I LOVE this movie- I was lucky enough to see the film when it first came out as a kid. Full uncut. Before it was added to the Banned list in the U.K and taken off the shelves. I have enjoyed it ever since- It is better than most of the Friday the 13th series if not all (personal opinion of course). The story is excellent- (remember this was still quite original at the time) 1981!! and the acting is top notch. The opening burning scene is cool as the caretaker already looks creepy without being burnt, then when he is released from hospital after failed surgery months later,(see pic to right!--->) the gore starts- Tom Savini's (surely i don't need to introduce him?!) FX work on this film is some of his best, and the scissors pushed into the prostitutes stomach skin is great- especially ... Read More:

VHS : Hackers [1996]

Hackers [1996]

starring: Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Jesse Bradford, Matthew Lillard, Laurence Mason
directed by: Iain Softley
February 01, 2000

There's a Little Red Riding-hood, a Big Bad Wolf, and a host of other hacker characters offering an eye fest of couture - they're all clothed by Jean Paul Gaultier - and who off-screen must have been frantically slipping in and out of this wonderful gear. Iain Softley has woven sound into image in a beautiful way, some of the best in the movies I guess, and though the dialogue itself doesn't rate as literature it's as expressive as the music and other noises in its own way. The hacker cast is great - all of them - and I've watched this film time and again, fast-forwarding on only three short scenes. If only the troubles of growing up were as good as this for all of us! Innocence - well almost - meets wicked world in unlikely story. A fairy tale, but I won't say if it's a happy ending or Grimm

directed by: Friðrik Þór Friðriksson

Was really looking forward to watching it. The scenery was stunning and it was interesting to gain an idea of life in Iceland. However, the encounters of the Japanese man with other people in Iceland did not leave me with a warm feeling.
