VHS : Southern Comfort [1981]

Southern Comfort [1981]

starring: Keith Carradine, Powers Boothe, Fred Ward, Franklyn Seales, T.K. Carter
directed by: Walter Hill
March 08, 1999

Although it's not as good as the groundbreaking 'Deliverance', which clearly inspired it, S.C. gives us more action and more suspense by taking us right into the heart of the Louisiana village where folk are hostile to interlopers. Army reservists on a soft training excercise suddenly find themselves fighting for their lives when their rifle fire alerts the locals. The closed in, humid atmosphere of inhospitable swampland inhabited by murderous redneck lunatics adds to the film's gripping intensity, and you keep watching to see if any of the soldiers make it out of there alive. Very much like Deliverance, and yet it has its own character altogether, and keeps the tension tightly strung throughout, delivering an exciting game of deadly cat and mouse.

VHS : The Right Stuff [1984]

The Right Stuff [1984]

starring: Sam Shepard, Scott Glenn, Ed Harris, Dennis Quaid, Fred Ward
directed by: Philip Kaufman
July 05, 1999

I have a mixed feeling about this movie. I love it because of the effects. It is wonderfully made and all the scenes feel "real" even the clearly CGI scenes. The actors are good too, Shephard is fine as Yeager and Ed Harris is perfect in the role of John Glenn etc. What i dislike about the movie (and the book for that matter) is that it simply doesn't tell the truth and some of the scenes with Gus Grissom is (imho) close to slander -and that is slandering a dead man which makes it worse. The portrayal of Grissom as a coward who "lost his cool", panicked and sank his capsule is simply not true and it is downright mean of Wolfe to repeat those allegations. Both Chris Craft and Gene Krantz call these allegations ridicoulus in their books and both knew Grissom and worked ... Read More:

VHS : Saigon : Off Limits [1987]

Saigon : Off Limits [1987]

starring: Willem Dafoe, Gregory Hines, Fred Ward, Amanda Pays
directed by: Christopher Crowe
October 01, 1999

We certainly know how to miss out on the really good films don't we? I'm amazed at what becomes a blockbuster and what flounders into obscurity.

We pile praises on films like "Titanic" and "The Passion of Jesus Christ" but we ignore the really good quality films that come out, and go for the glitz and the glamour.

Oh the peculiarity of the movie going human race is all I can say!

Saigon was a film that really should have been a hit, it was that good.

Gregory Hines gave a solid performance as a Albaby Perkins a Military Policeman based in Saigon in the late 1960s, along with the smouldering William Defoe as his partner Buck McGriff.

Keeping the peace, having fun and doing their job is part of the game but when Saigon ... Read More:

Road Trip - Unseen And Explicit [2000]

directed by: Todd Phillips

This movie is very funny indeed. However it's not suitable for children, old-fashioned people with manners,or parents who are thinking of paying for their sons and daughters' education at a university. The sad thing is that students really do behave this badly.I couldn't watch it again because apart from the gross behaviour of the students there isn't much of a story going on.

directed by: Alan Rudolph

View this as a whole and you will be left up, down and numb via the film's realism and gritty content. The character depth is so close to reality that you empathize with their situations. I am proud to own this alongside other work by Modine.

VHS : Silkwood [1984]

Silkwood [1984]

starring: Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell, Cher, Craig T. Nelson, Fred Ward
directed by: Mike Nichols
October 30, 2000

Interesting to see the goings on in the plutonium plant and the way the locals were employed in the high tech plant without really knowing the dangers. Obviously most of the workers would not want to see the plant closed as it seemed to have been the main/only employer in the area. I found Miss Streep's acting to be annoying because she was trying too hard to portray a trailer trash image. She is never without a cigarette off duty
and constantly flicking back her hair as if suffering from some tic. It came across to me as being very overacted and artificial ie she was trying too hard. The film dwelt too long on Silkwood's domestic and sexual life without adding much to the story. This aspect could have been drastically cut and made a less boring film.
