this film started quite promisingly, but then suddenly slowed down and then picked up. rather an uneven film but still has good scenes.
james cagney simply steals the film with another riveting performance but with a different style as well.this time, he isn't quite so keen to get involved in any shady dealings.(i would have thought he'd have enough on his mind with trying to prove his innocence)
there is certainly a gritty, uncompromising atmosphere, especially in the prison scenes; corrupt prison officials, mentally unbalanced convicts.who wants to do time?
teaming up cagney with george raft was a good move. they work well together. a shame raft didn't make it to the A list of stars; not the best actor i've seen, but good ... Read More:

It was in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town that Frank Capra perfected the blend of comedy and social commentary that would become his trademark. The screwball comedy was graceful rather than frantic and the social elements of Robert Riskin's fine screenplay are handled in an even-handed manner that earned Capra the second of his three Acadamy Awards for Best Director. Both Gary Cooper as the tuba playing no nonsense Longfellow Deeds and Jean Arthur as the reporter who exploits him until she falls for his goodness are wonderful in this true Capra classic.
Longfellow Deeds (Cooper) lives in the small town of Mandrake Falls where he makes a living writing greeting card poems and spends his free time playing the tuba. He is less than enthused when a ... Read More:

With Stagecoach the western took a gigantic step forward and stopped being just a movie .Here we had real people in a real (bad)situation. Not just an action movie but infilled with little character studies The drunken doctor (Thomas Mitchell)what a performance who in spite of everything pulls it out of the bag when one of the passengers enroute to visit her army officer husband delivers her baby. The Ringo Kid (John Wayne)proving he really could act and how!The Marshall (George Bancroft)the driver (Andy Devine) a great double act ,the creeping feeling of tension as they realise there are no fresh horses for the final stage of their already perilous journey threated by maurading Apaches, cut to the chase and action that would do any modern picture proud, and ... Tracy and Andy Safian (Nicole Kidman, Bill Pullman) are a young couple just starting out in life. He's an associate dean at the college and she's a teacher, and their big, old house needs repairs. To make ends meet, they rent out the upstairs room to an old high school classmate of Andy's, Dr. Jed Hill (Alec Baldwin). Tracy thinks he's impossibly arrogant but Andy likes him. One day, Tracy is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening pains, and Jed is the surgeon on call. His actions will destroy all of their lives.
This is one creepy thriller with great acting and a script that will keep you guessing - and on the edge of your seat. Baldwin is perfectly cast as the megalomaniac doctor. He's both attractive and repulsive and owns the screen. ... Read More:

William Holden and Glenn Ford team-up in this 1941 western directed by Geroge Marshall. The pair play Dan Thomas and Tod Ramsey, a couple of Confederate veterans who journey to Texas via Kansas to get into the cattle business. What makes "Texas" an interesting film is that it brings a sense of humor to the story. In fact, some people thought the film went so far as to be some sort of spoof or burlesque of the western genre, but I do not think it really goes that far. Yes, it is a bit tongue-in-cheek at times, but the relationship between the two guys is done straight up and that is the heart of the film. "Texas" is not a classic western, but it is certainly above average. Claire Trevor has top billing, but she does not have all that much to do, which is surprising ... Read More:

No film that Pauline Kael despised on principle (in this case the principle that it was directed by Robert Wise) can be all bad, and so it proves with The Hindenburg, which falls somewhere between a countdown-to-catastrophe period political thriller a la Tora! Tora! Tora!, 70s conspiracy movie and by-the-numbers disaster movie. It's as a disaster movie that it fails the most: the destruction of the Hindenburg was simply too quick to make for much of a climax, and playing the famous black and white newsreel footage intercut with unimpressive cutaways to the less than stellar cast at the end feels like a real cheat, especially since it's often clumsily handled. On the plus side it offers a clever screen story from legendary Monday Mystery Movie TV scribes William Levinson ... Read More:

This is a truly awful film. I know a bit about how religions operate, and this was the most schmaltzy load of codswollop I have ever seen. It was totally implausible, glib, over the top, crass and dull.
There was nothing subtle or understated. The priest is a cardboard cutout, the rabbi is a joke and the business woman is a caricature. Appalling. It wasn't even funny.
If Richard Curtis went to America and did a film about religion, this would be it.
