VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey - Clouds Of Witness

Lord Peter Wimsey - Clouds Of Witness

starring: Ian Carmichael, Glyn Houston, Mark Eden, Rachel Herbert, David Langton
April 03, 2000

Viewers beware. On the Amazon web site the cast list is entirely wrong. This is not a Petherbridge Wimsey but a Carmichael Wimsey. It remains a wonderful DVD. It is faithful to the book and grips one just as tightly. However I find Carmichael plays Wimsey with less depth than Petheridge. Wimsey is a somewhat tortured soul and this is not a Carmichael expertise.

VHS : Citizen Kane [1942]

Citizen Kane [1942]

starring: Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore, Agnes Moorehead, Ruth Warrick
directed by: Orson Welles
April 11, 2005

Watch out!

I bought this edition after reading the "Amazon.co.uk Review" above, where it says "On the DVD: Citizen Kane in this DVD special edition is beautifully remastered and comes with a feature illustrating the before and after of the restoration process. A 50-minute documentary, 'Anatomy of a Classic', hosted by Barry Norman, delves into the making of the film..." etc.

Big mistake: Nothing of the description of the DVD is true! The review is written about a completely different edition of the film, not this one.

The original film is a masterpiece, but this edition is certainly not!

VHS : The Final Programme [1973]

The Final Programme [1973]

starring: Jon Finch, Jenny Runacre, Hugh Griffith, Patrick Magee, Sterling Hayden
directed by: Robert Fuest
November 04, 2002

This is based on the novel by Michael Moorcock.

Like most films of the book there had to be compromises.

The main issue I see with the film is that it feels empty - there are very few people around.

Since the climax of the book is the birth of a fully-formed hermaphrodite all-purpose human being and the mass suicide of Europe's population in the sea (after a triumphal procession), this was always going to be a problem in getting the transfer to the screen right. Also there is a lot more depth in the book. All we have here is a prolonged chase between the Cornelius brothers, a couple of shootouts and then the denouement in the mad scientists' lair. Oh, and a bout of vampirism.

The exposition with ... Read More:

VHS : Papillon [1974]

Papillon [1974]

starring: Steve McQueen, Dustin Hoffman, Victor Jory, Don Gordon, Anthony Zerbe
directed by: Franklin J. Schaffner
July 01, 2002

This film had a huge impact on me when I watched it growing up. Yes it is a long film and at times it is heavy going but stick with it. Amazing performances from McQueen and Hoffman. This is the greatest true story of escape ever told. The ending is the most moving, sad and thought provoking I've seen in a film. Long after the credits have gone you will still have Papillon in your head. They don't make films like this anymore.

Wonderful movie with wonderful story, wonderful actors, wondurvel costumes and wonderful music from Henry Mancini. Sophia represent in this movie completely another side of her talent at movie making. The story interested me from first view and I fall in love. Definetly buy and watch!

VHS : Doctor In The House [1954]

Doctor In The House [1954]

starring: Dirk Bogarde, Muriel Pavlow, Kenneth More, Donald Sinden, Kay Kendall
directed by: Ralph Thomas
August 14, 2000

One of the reasons I love this movie is the fact that my favourite actor Kenneth More is in it and I have liked the movie since I was young. But it is also one of the funniest movies that this country has produced and one of many great 1950 comedies alongside "Genevieve", "Carry on Sergeant" and others. Like some of these other films (More's "Geniveve" amongst them) it shows a Britain confined to celluoid. Perhaps a gentler Britain to the one we know today. Doctor in the House however is pure fun and with Donald Sinden and James Robertston Justice (delightful as ever) it is extra fun.

Blood From The Mummy's Tomb [1971]

starring: Andrew Keir, Valerie Leon, James Villiers, Hugh Burden, George Coulouris
directed by: Michael Carreras, Seth Holt
May 17, 1999

I saw this flick when i was just a lass and enjoyed it immensely so i'm keen it's not overlooked as it's a groovy film. An Evil(But powerfull...GIRL POWER !) Egyptian Priestess takes over the body of the beautifull daughter of one of the team who discovered her sarcophagus (whith the cartoosh that bore her name scratched off)! She then setts about retreiving the sacred objects that each of the team posess...I particularly enjoyed the retreival of the Jackels skull from the unfortunate man in the mental assylum..very spooky. This film has a good plot and a twist at the end. So if you enjoy severed hands, gruesom murders, egyptian magic, historical spookyness and heaving clevage + lotts of eyeshadow.... buy this movie you'll enjoy it too!
