I saw a Sam Shepherd play recently, so I was quite surprised to see that Sam Shepherd wrote this screenplay. But having seen two pieces of his work, you can detect a style. Shepherd examines the dark side of families, the frustrations, the pain, the fights and their consequences. He likes long monologues uncovering a web of events and feelings. I think the dialogue in this film is superb.
The landscape and the music is also rich in metaphor. Kinski is a wisperish, idealised beauty. The other adult characters are weatherbeaten by life's demands. This is a long, slow and often banal film, but it says something about real lives. I first saw this film over twenty years ago. It lingers and haunts, and that thematic strum of the guitar ... There's probably not much that can be said about Alien that hasn't been said before but I find myself compelled to post a review as I'm sat watching Alien for the possibly the 100th time.
Alien is easily in my top three favourite films of all time along with Star Wars (Episode IV) and Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's interesting that Alien was conceived by Ridley Scott as a reaction to the Star Wars fever gripping the world. Scott wanted to twist the themes we all know and love in Star Wars around and make something altogether far more dark and sinister. It's a testament to the quality of Star Wars that it can in some way inspire a work as great as this - possibly the equal of Star Wars in every way but inverted in terms of tone.

As you can tell from the other people's reviews this movie is brilliant!! But what is not said (at least I don't think so! I didd'nt read all 100+ reviews!) is the picture quality! i'm using a Toshiba 47" 1080i LCD HDTV with a PlayStation3 with HDMI connection.
For a DVD it's got AMAZING detail! I'm surprised they managed to fit this 3 hour film with this quality onto a DVD!! I have a collection of around 500 DVDs & this must be in the top 5 of best picture quality in my selection!
Buy it! you won't regret it! (or wait for the Blu-ray)

I adore this movie! I first saw it about 17 years ago when I was 15. I was staying in my best friends house and we rented out this movie because we both had a crush on Andrew McCarthy! Anyway we watched it three times in 24 hours!!
I can't tell you why I loved it so much, but I think I could relate to Andie (Molly Ringwald's character) at the time because I liked to be my own person, not a clone. One of the main reasons that I love this movie is DUCKIE! I love him, yes I fancied Andrew McCarthy at that time (I want to stress AT THAT TIME,NOT NOW!) but when I watch this film, it's Duckie I want Andie to be with and who I would have chosen myself! I know that the film originally ended this way (the right way!)but test audiences didn't like it so they reshot the ... Read More:

When this movie came out, I had just read all Raymond Chandler's novels for the first time and was hooked. Mitchum captures the weary, romantic private eye perfect - and is helped out by a great cast, Charlotte Rampling, Harry Dean Stanton ...besides Chinatown, the best noir-style movie of the seventies. Great pace and laden with atmosphere.
This movie made me a Mitchum-fan for life.
Philip Marlowe is in many ways a loser, and Mitchum is not afraid to
show this side of our hero, unlike so many other screen-versions of
this icon of crime novels.
