VHS : Goldfinger [1964]

Goldfinger [1964]

starring: Sean Connery, Gert Fröbe, Honor Blackman, Shirley Eaton, Tania Mallet
directed by: Guy Hamilton
November 06, 1995

Gimmicky, disjionted, over reliant on this new gadgetry which was suddenly very appealing to a fast growing consumerist society, it has far less of the essence of James Bond as in the Flemming novels than previous Bond movies. It has things in it that make it memorable, but its biggest fault was to take us down the 'wealthy mad man with a fiendish weapon of mass destruction tucked away in a holed out volcano, with a couple of hundred uniformed henchmen-cum-mercenaries happily working for him' storyline, the kind of stuff which gave Mike Myers so much material with which to ridicule the formula. It is only Pussy Galore that stops me giving this movie the dreaded one star treatment. Really, this was not the path to take our beloved 007 down. You ... Read More:

VHS : Shalako [1969]

Shalako [1969]

starring: Sean Connery, Brigitte Bardot, Stephen Boyd, Jack Hawkins, Peter van Eyck
directed by: Edward Dmytryk
February 26, 1996

I don't know if inept, snotty Euro-Aristos actually went on safaris in the middle of the Old West, but if you can get by that particular set-up, the rest of the film is pretty enjoyable, with good action scenes, lovely scenery well photographed, and a likeable cast giving value for money.

There have been complaints that Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot fail to Ignite The Screen--instead, they display a likeable, low-key camaderie as an indian scout and a titled Frenchwoman who's a lot faster on the uptake than most of her companions--crude sex appeal gives way to something more realistic and appealing. Bardot forgoes pouting and wriggling and is all the more likeable for it (1968 was also the year of her excellent cameo in the "William ... Read More:

VHS : Minder - On The Orient Express [1985]

Minder - On The Orient Express [1985]

starring: Dennis Waterman, George Cole, Adam Faith, Honor Blackman
directed by: Francis Megahy
January 14, 2002

The first of only two feature-length 'Minder' episodes (the other being 'An Officer And A Car-salesman'), this is a must-have for all fans of that seminal 1980s classic that made 'Arthur Daley' a by-word for dodgy dealing, and introduced 'er indoors' to the Oxford English Dictionary.

After leaping to the defence of an attractive young woman, salt-of-the-earth Terry McCann is rewarded with a romantic journey for two. But instead of enjoying the warm female company of his club-manager girlfriend, Terry is, of course, stitched-up by loquacious, summons-dodging Arfur, who inveigles his way onto the world's most romantic train ... by taking, of course, diabolical liberties.

Paragon of Fulham (or is it 'Ammersmiff) law & order, and ... Read More:

VHS : A Night To Remember [1958]

A Night To Remember [1958]

starring: Kenneth More, Ronald Allen, Robert Ayres, Honor Blackman, Anthony Bushell
directed by: Roy Ward Baker
June 01, 1992

Without question,'A Night To Remember' is the finest film ever made about the Titanic disaster.I know that the overblown 'Titanic' won a record number of awards, but it pales in comparison to this fine movie.

We all know the story by now.Over 1500 lives lost and many lessons learned. This movie has an almost documentary feel to it and the fact that it was filmed in black and white somehow adds to the atmosphere. It is moving, filled with tension and features people that you actually care about.Directed with realism by Roy Ward Baker and very well acted this really is a first rate effort.

There are quite a few very interesting extras with this DVD so it is extremely highly recommended.Probably one of the finest British movies of the last 50 ... Read More:
