VHS : Splash [1984]

Splash [1984]

starring: Tom Hanks, Daryl Hannah, Eugene Levy, John Candy, Dody Goodman
directed by: Ron Howard
February 03, 2003

In the first of Ron Howard's and Tom Hanks' collaborations, Hanks stars as Allen Bauer, an unlucky in love man who travels to Cape Cod, where he meets a beautiful woman, who has a secret, she is a mermaid.

In perhaps a forgotten gem of the 80's, Howard delivers a heart warming tale about one man and his unlucky in love life, and how the extraordinary can bring out the hearts desires in a truly good funny and ultimately tale.

Hardly his best role, Hanks still delivers in a cliché hero role as Allen, someone all men can relate to. A man who needs to get over his own personal fear in his pursuit for happiness.

Daryl Hannah (Kill Bill) is excellent in the role of Madison the mermaid. The way Hannah portrays ... Read More:

VHS : Pimpernel Smith (1941)

Pimpernel Smith (1941)

starring: Leslie Howard, Francis L. Sullivan, Mary Morris, Hugh McDermott
directed by: Leslie Howard

What a pity that now we have DVD rather than video this superb movie update of the 'Scarlet Pimpernel' story has no outlet.

My VHS copy is getting a little worn as this is one of my favourite 'all-time' greatest movies.

Please, Oh please release this movie in a DVD (R2) format and I'll be really happy.

Winnie The Pooh : The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh

starring: Sebastian Cabot, Junius Matthews, Barbara Luddy, Howard Morris, John Fiedler
directed by: John Lounsbery, Wolfgang Reitherman
March 18, 1997

In 1966 Walt Disney decided to make a movie based on A.A. Milne's classic stories because his daughters had loved the stories so much.Walt soon found out the Americans were not so familiar with the Winnie The Pooh characters so Walt decided to break the film up into 3 short movies so Pooh could be more popular if he could build up an American following.Later the 3 films were combined to make this film masterpiece.Walt did perfect casting.Sterling Holloway IS Winnie The Pooh.Paul Winchell IS Tigger.John Fiedler IS Piglet.Junius Matthews IS Rabbit. All these actors did their characters perfectly.Sterling Holloway (Kaa in The Jungle Book) used his timeless amusing talent on Pooh.Paul Winchell (Dick Dastardly in Wacky Races) does brilliantly as Tigger.Character ... VHS : Razorback [1983]

Razorback [1983]

starring: Gregory Harrison, Arkie Whiteley, Bill Kerr, Chris Haywood, David Argue
directed by: Russell Mulcahy
August 14, 1995

I saw this film for the first time when I was about 8 but that doesn't matter and boy even though this film certainly shows when it was made (the 80's) it still manages to provide a kick ass hour and a half of entertainment with gloriuous photography and a great set of completly unknown actors.
Directed by Russel Mulachy (who went on to highlander 1 & 2, Ricochet and Ressurection)it's a simple story line. Old man loses baby to giant human eating hog seeks revenge at the same time simple minded american is looking for his wife who has gone missing in the wilderness and nturally is in for a shock when he finds the reason for her dissaperance. One of my fave parts of the movie has to be the two dim witted brothers DICKO and BENNY who add a nice bit of ... Read More:

VHS : The Petrified Forest [1936]

The Petrified Forest [1936]

starring: Leslie Howard, Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, Genevieve Tobin, Dick Foran
directed by: Archie Mayo
March 06, 2000

Leslie Howard and Humphrey Bogart were in the original Broadway play. And this was made again into a film called "Escape in the Desert." Because I knew this movie was supposed to have Humphrey Bogart in it, it was almost like watching two movies, the one before Humphrey Bogart appeared, and the one with Humphrey Bogart. The actual shooting, (oops) I mean filming location is Red Rock Canyon, California, USA. With one This is a story a lot of people coming from different directions in their life. Together they evaluate and solve their problems the best they can in a short given time. The beauty in this movie is the action and reaction of the characters.

A similar action and reaction movie that comes to mind is "Key Largo (1948) ". ... Read More:

VHS : Wonderful Ice Cream Suit

Wonderful Ice Cream Suit

starring: Joe Mantegna, Esai Morales, Edward James Olmos, Clifton Collins Jr., Gregory Sierra
directed by: Stuart Gordon
August 06, 2001

This short but perfectly formed film begins when five friends decide to pool their final few dollars so they can buy a dream. The five have nothing in common except they are down on their luck, they each have twenty dollars and they are exactly the same measurements. No co-incidence as they are convinced that the hundred dollar 'ice cream suit'holds the key to an up turn in their fortunes. Each man will wear the suit for one day a week, but for the first night they will share the honour for one hour each. As each of the friends dons the suit it seems they were right; but can they trust each other to look after this pristine, perfectly taylored, piece of material good fortune?

A fantasically original and captivating film, very funny and written and ... Read More:

VHS : High Anxiety [1977]

High Anxiety [1977]

starring: Mel Brooks, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Korman, Ron Carey
directed by: Mel Brooks
April 06, 1989

High Anxiety is a spoof of all of the major Alfred Hitchcock films. Both the characters and the plot line are the sort of thing you literally laugh out loud at. Mel Brooks plays a psychiatrist at the Institute for the very very nervous and has an extreme phobia of heights. The film is the same sort of humour as "Blazing Saddles" (but funnier) and also stars the magnificent Madeline Kahn who compliments Brooks perfectly. This film is so underated its untrue. From the pointy breasted bondage crazed Nurse Diesal to the fumbling nice-but-dim chauffer Brofy - the film just gives laugh after laugh - you just never want this film to end! It really does put the Leslie Nielson spoofs to shame. It is the funniest film I have ever seen.
