The Ninth Gate [2000]

starring: Johnny Depp, Frank Langella, Lena Olin, Emmanuelle Seigner, Barbara Jefford
directed by: Roman Polanski
October 30, 2002

Take a fantastic novel with two, related, intertwining plot lines. Decide that, to make your film, you need to get rid of one of them and jettison the more interesting one. End up with yet another devil-in-human-form film, and call it "The Ninth Gate"....

Arturo Perez Reverte is a remarkably talented novelist, and "The Dumas Club" is one of his finest tales, which in itself is utterly gripping. Unfortunately, treated like this by Polanski, it just doesn't work for me as a film. It's very frustrating to see what could have been a highly original treatment by a very fine film-maker turned into a relatively banal piece.

The message is very clear - if you enjoyed the novel you would be well advised to keep clear of the ... Read More:

More than 60 years ago, Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor. During the months which followed, the United States struggled to recover as Japanese military victories continued throughout the Pacific. This film is based on William Lindsay White's interviews of four members of Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Three, published as They Were Expendable in 1942. John Ford and Robert Montgomery co-directed and Montgomery also stars as Lieutenant John Brickley. Throughout much of this film, Brickley's squadron only provides courier service between Bataan and Corregidor. When given the opportunity, however, Squadron Three does manage to sink several of the enemy's ships as the Japanese complete their conquest of the Philippines, eventually forcing the American forces ... Must have been one of the first great disaster movies. Great preformance from Clarke Gable playing the rouge and his friend the Priest played by Spencer Tracey. The movie centres around the disater of the earth quake that did hit the city in the early 1900s however the build up to the event is brillent and the special effects and footage of the quake as good as anything you would view today. I recommend this movie to all who love a film with a good plot and plenty of action.
