VHS : Nixon [1996]

Nixon [1996]

starring: Anthony Hopkins, David Paymer, J.T. Walsh, Joan Allen, James Woods
directed by: Oliver Stone
November 04, 1996

I'd almost given up on finding this, I remember Oliver Stone mentioning he was working on this but then heard little else, I should have known it wasn't a priority release and arrived only on R1 very low key. Though I tracked it down on Amazon recently for very reasonable price. Any chance to see more of this superb piece of the cinema is a chance I'm not gonna miss.

JFK remains probably my favourite film of all time and Nixon is it's companion piece. Watching it again I think the gap between the 2 films has got smaller, Nixon is easily Stone's 2nd best in my opinion.

Their is so many things to admire about this film, most of all is Hopkins without doubt alongside Stevens the Butler in the amazing Remains of the Day, ... Read More:

VHS : The Getaway [1994]

The Getaway [1994]

starring: Alec Baldwin, Kim Basinger, Michael Madsen, James Woods, Jennifer Tilly
directed by: Roger Donaldson
June 05, 1995

Don't buy this!
The packaging on the box claims this is ' unrated' - IT ISN'T!
ALL the sex scenes are missing - how the studio involved can get away with the lie on the packaging is a mystery to me, but they have!
Worthless sanitised US version, NOT the print that was released in Europe.
AVOID!!

Mickey's House Of Villains

starring: Wayne Allwine, Russi Taylor, Tony Anselmo, Bill Farmer, Tress MacNeille
directed by: Jamie Mitchell, Rick Schneider

As other reviwers have said the plot is thin on the ground but I brought this for the cartoons which really is the point. How do they shape up? Trick or Treat is delightful. The John Cleese narrated epic is sesatinal and many of the peices animated just to music such as Dance of the Goofies look and sound fantastic.

But some of the shorts - especially Lonesome Ghosts - were, in our minds, a little disturbing. This was more down to the animation style and high violance than the storyline but this cartoon also dragged compared to others.

So, is it worth it? Well, we brought it just for something cheesy and fun to watch and it forfilled that for us but we'll be using the scene selction button from now on.

VHS : The Virgin Suicides [2000]

The Virgin Suicides [2000]

starring: Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartnett, James Woods, Kathleen Turner, Michael Paré
directed by: Sofia Coppola
May 21, 2001

This film could have been so much better than it was. Not that it's a bad film at all - it's quite beautifully shot, all the roles are played with ease and admirable understatement, and it's played out to a hazy backing track that matches the adolescent yearnings of the characters perfectly. Most of the ingredients are there and the film is certainly easy on the eye and extremely watchable. Yet at the end, I was left with a dissatisfyingly unsubstantial impression as to what the film meant. Why did these teenage girls committ suicide and why did I care so little? A little more imaginative crafting of the script might have enabled this film to say something more tangible about the nature of adolescence, virginity or the reasons for teenage suicide. The few attempts ... Read More:

VHS : Ghosts From The Past [1997]

Ghosts From The Past [1997]

starring: Alec Baldwin, James Woods, Whoopi Goldberg, Virginia Madsen, Susanna Thompson
directed by: Rob Reiner
June 15, 1998

I dont really enjoy whoopi goldbergs comedy films i have to say but in this as in "the colour purple" she is magnificent. Of course it helps that the writing is above top drawer and that the whole film is beautifully put together. The film opens with the statement "this is a true story". It tells the story of the murder of a black civil rights leader in mississippi by an extreeme right wing bigot played brilliantly by james woods who after two mistrials is not convicted. Alec Baldwin plays a lawyer who looks into the case many years later and awakens to the prejudice that he has taken for granted his whole life we follow his gradual realisation that if he doesnt take a stand nothing will change. This is the kind of film making that sets a standard, this is what films should do: ... Read More:

VHS : Stuart Little 2 [2002]

Stuart Little 2 [2002]

starring: Michael J. Fox, Geena Davis, Hugh Laurie, Jonathan Lipnicki, Anna Hoelck
directed by: Rob Minkoff
March 08, 2004

My 2yo loved Stuart Little I and II, but the second film contains the death of a very major character - the 'bad' falcon. The first film showed 'baddies' getting their come-uppance, but, in typical kids-film style, always made clear that they weren't really hurt, learned their lesson etc. The second film doesn't do this - the falcon falls from a very great height after a fatal collision, crashes out of sight inside a bin, and a hungry cat jumps up on the edge licking his lips!
After several viewings, my child picked up on this and got distressed.
Great films, full of humour and charm, but who really wants to explain death to a toddler?
