VHS : The Masque of the Red Death

The Masque of the Red Death

starring: Vincent Price, Hazel Court, Jane Asher, David Weston, Nigel Green
directed by: Roger Corman

A very dreamlike film which stays truer to the original story than most Poe adaptations. This is more an arty meditation on decadence and corruption than a basic horror film. The pay-off, that death treats us all rich/poor/good/evil the same, is leagues above most modern horror films with their rubberstamp 'good guy finally kills bad guy at the 15th attempt' plots.

Vivid colour is one of the most striking things about this film, and is used to great effect, especially in the series of mysterious coloured rooms, each with it's own symbollic purpose.

Whatever your opinion of the acting skills of Vincent Price (genius or incredible ham?) you have to agree that here the script, set and supporting cast are just made for him.

VHS : The Stone Tape [1972]

The Stone Tape [1972]

starring: Michael Bryant, Jane Asher, Iain Cuthbertson, Michael Bates, Reginald Marsh
directed by: Peter Sasdy
August 20, 2001

Simply put this film is worth a lot although I would not spend to much money finding out what its like try for example to loan it from a friend or perhaps rent it from Amazon. The story and direction are for the most decent however some scenes and the way in witch they are executed would leave a lot of people baffled and if like me you watched in wonder as most people shouted even when it was supposed to be a tender moment. One other thing I noticed was the name of the Electronics Company RYAN, and every now and then the main character would make a reference to him in an Irish accent very funny. Must be what BA does when they talk about Ryanair! Thanks for reading and enjoy the Stone SHOUTING tape. not bad perhaps a remake would not be a bad Idea ... Read More:

VHS : Murder Most Horrid - The Girl from Ipanema/A Determined Woman/Murder At Tea-Time [1996]

Murder Most Horrid - The Girl from Ipanema/A Determined Woman/Murder At Tea-Time [1996]

starring: Dawn French, Martin Jarvis, Jane Asher, Jim Broadbent, Kathy Burke

These are hilarious spoofs on "Masterpiece Theatre" type productions (Dawn appears in the beginning pulling out a book from a library that includes a prominent Shakespeare anthology). Dawn French is marvelous in totally different roles, and each of the 3 episodes is cleverly written and staged. These are great fun to watch. Why BBC doesn't promote this series and why they don't put it on DVD is beyond comprehension.

VHS : Henry VIII And His Six Wives [1972]

Henry VIII And His Six Wives [1972]

starring: Keith Michell, Donald Pleasence, Charlotte Rampling, Jane Asher, Frances Cuka
directed by: Waris Hussein
January 26, 1992

From an early age I had an interest in the Tudors, and my parents bought me this film when I was still at school. I very much enjoyed it at the time - it seemed to encapsulate everything that was interesting about Henry VIII, his personal life and his six wives. The costumes and settings were inspiring to my imagination and that is something which I can still appreciate today.

Watching this film as an adult a few years later, I think it's good but I can't work up the same enthusiasm that I felt when watching it as a child. The depictions of the wives, which back then I found memorable and easy to understand, now seem cliched and almost cartoony. The pace of the film is faster than I remember and the drama quickly shifts from one wife to the next, ... Read More:
