VHS : Beyond The Clouds [1994] [1997]

Beyond The Clouds [1994] [1997]

starring: Fanny Ardant, Chiara Caselli, Irène Jacob, John Malkovich, Sophie Marceau
directed by: Michelangelo Antonioni, Wim Wenders
June 23, 1997

The first time I watched this film I was slightly bored - couldn't understand what was being said or why. However, having watched it again recently I took each 'story' at face value and found myself thoroughly enjoying the beautiful camera work and actually making some sense of what the film was about and the various themes at play.

if you're not interested in watching films about the genesis of ideas, this is definitely not for you, but if you just want to sit back and watch a couple of hours of beautiful film making, I would reccomend it.

VHS : Roseanna's Grave [1997]

Roseanna's Grave [1997]

starring: Jean Reno, Mercedes Ruehl, Polly Walker, Mark Frankel, Trevor Peacock
directed by: Paul Weiland
June 08, 1998

Seen once and never again, my perpetual inability to buy "Roseanna's Grave / For Roseanna" on a UK region 2 DVD seems to be an enduring and unsolvable mystery.

This is a totally brilliant, charming little film which plays in the same league as AMELIE. Do I really need to say any more?

Copyright holders - PLEASE get this one back out onto the UK market.

VHS : Ronin [1998]

Ronin [1998]

starring: John Frankenheimer|Robert De Niro|Jean Reno|Natascha McElhone
May 15, 2000

This film left me with the distinct feeling of having been ripped-off. A poster featuring some very purposeful-looking criminal types, a European setting, a famous director - there initially appeared to be much on offer. The reality, however, was quite different. In this mindless mess of a movie, Robert De Niro reprises his stock `90s role of gun-toting anti-hero and, in the company of a ragbag of international B-listers, takes a trip into the heart, not of darkness, but of dullness. The basic story is, well, pretty basic. The film consists mostly of a series of ridiculous stand-offs and arguments between De Niro and the other players, who comprise a gang engaged in some kind of convoluted theft. Oh, and there are couple of car-chases - wow! Jean Reno becomes ... Read More:

VHS : Mission: Impossible [1996]

Mission: Impossible [1996]

starring: Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Emmanuelle Béart, Henry Czerny, Jean Reno
directed by: Brian De Palma

Cruise again on another self funded pile of rubbish making out he can pretend as well as professional actors can. He can't, and yet again the bigness of face on the cover shows that he is the indestructable hero of the film. This is as silly as it gets, ruining a perfectly crap TV series and making it worse with this stunted half-wit bad actor nutjob playing the hero. Genuine actors must talk behind his back about his lack of skill. He should retire now to spare the embarrassment of not winning any decent awards for his version of pretending. A tragically bad film peppered with cheapness of script, camerawork and acting. Don't waste your time on this.

VHS : French Kiss [1995]

French Kiss [1995]

starring: Meg Ryan, Kevin Kline, Timothy Hutton, Jean Reno, François Cluzet
directed by: Lawrence Kasdan
February 26, 2001

I loved this film. Kevin Kline is excellent as the french gadabout and what a brillant job on the accent. There is so much to like about this film. Light romantic comedies are not normally my thing but this is well worth a watch. Its a shame Kline hasn't risen higher up the Hollwood pecking order.Remember how good he was in a Fish Called Wanda. Any man wanting to get in the wifes good books would do well to get this as a gift. Totally brilliant and really funny. The french locations only add to the charm of the film.
