One of the best film on WWII in London... and surprisingly enough not available in the UK (and not even in European format). I first saw the film about 15 years ago and have now bought it for my daughter (it fits perfectly with the year 3 curriculum) and of course for me. I think we've watched it about 10 times over the last 6 months. Moving and fun, don't hesitate to buy it.

After watching this film I have stumbled across many a bad review, critics slating Bjork saying that it was a bad move to ever make this film etc. And to be totally honest it's hard get an idea of the film from reviews on here becuase Bjork fans are pretty die hard and will love it regardless, anyone who hates Bjork would hate the film so I'll tell you what camp i'm in; I like Bjork. I love some of her stuff, I hate some it. Now the film? Fantastic!
It's so original that i can see how many people would be put off but i thought it was one of the best films I had seen for a very long time. However, be warned, as well as slightly weird this is traumatising! I was in floods of tears for most of the night! Definitely watch this if just for a unique experience ... Read More:

Lovely slow production, and very typical of mid-80's British TV. The "very poor" picture quality spoken of by another reviewer is a little misleading. At the time of production it was quite normal for BBC drama to be made on basically 16mm news film stock. This is what we have here in Hotel Du Lac. This DVD is the best quality that could exist, even striking a new print would not produce better results. If you are a British viewer you will recognise this "look" instantly, its not too bad and for me adds something.

Quite frankly this was one of the most awful films I have ever had the misfortune to watch. It was slow, with flashing lights and looked like it had been shot by somebody who had the shakes. The dialogue was stilted and it was very hard to understand. We gave up after 45 mins

All the criticisms voiced by the previous reviewers regarding the quality of this particular DVD are true. If you want to see Europa as it was meant to be seen, in a correct 2:35.1 aspect ratio, with 5.1 surround sound and the much needed colour corrections, then I would recommend purchasing the 'E Trilogy Box Set' (2005), which includes digitally re-mastered versions of von Trier's first three films The Element of Crime, Epidemic and the film in question (my review of that particular product can be found on this very same site). As a result, this review will focus entirely on the merits of the film itself, which for me, is one of the greatest and perhaps most underappreciated films of the last thirty-five years. The review is as follows...
