VHS : Home Alone [1990]

Home Alone [1990]

starring: Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard, Roberts Blossom
directed by: Chris Columbus
October 20, 2003

Easily the best Christmas movie for kids growing up in the eighties and nineties, and deserves to be mentioned along side the classics from previous decades. It is no small feat that this has already become for many, traditional Christmas viewing, given that it is still a fairly recent film, at least in comparison to The Snowman, It's A Wonderful Life, Santa Claus The Movie etc. For kids, the movie has everything- action, excitement, humour, and for everyone else the story and acting are engaging.

The idea of being left Home Alone for a while, especially after your relatives have been so annoying, will appeal to kids as they will have peace to do anything they want and let their imaginations fly. Cue lots of ice cream and sled ... Read More:

VHS : The Rescuers Down Under (Disney) [1991]

The Rescuers Down Under (Disney) [1991]

starring: Bob Newhart, Eva Gabor, John Candy, Tristan Rogers, Adam Ryen
directed by: Hendel Butoy, Mike Gabriel
May 12, 1997

This sequel to the rescuers was something special to disney, as this is the first sequal of feature animation to also become a feature. This is currently the only sequel to date to become a feature; this shows disney had great expectations and faith in this film.

This film has a similar story style to the original film, where a kid gets captured and its up to the rescue aid society to come to the rescue. The character cast in this film is amazing, and the animators do an incredible job at portraying emotion and expression through them.

This film also, as many may not know, include disney first 3d visual effects in 2d animation. There is a flying sequence at the start which is actually 3D which at the time of release was breathtaking, ... Read More:

VHS : The Great Outdoors [1988]

The Great Outdoors [1988]

starring: Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, Stephanie Faracy, Annette Bening, Chris Young
directed by: Howard Deutch
August 16, 1999

You pretty much know that any film featuring both John Candy and Dan Aykroyd is going to generate some laughs, making The Great Outdoors a pretty safe bet for anyone in the mood for a little comedy - and comedy is basically all you should expect here (any film that supplies subtitles for raccoon conversations isn't really trying to express anything meaningful), despite the fact that John Hughes wrote the script. For once, Hughes' involvement does more harm than good. While The Great Outdoors is certainly a good movie, it's not a very good John Hughes movie. Of course, it's hard to follow 80s classics like The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, but Hughes' heart just didn't seem to be in this one. This is best demonstrated by the teenaged romance part of the story, ... Read More:

VHS : Splash [1984]

Splash [1984]

starring: Tom Hanks, Daryl Hannah, Eugene Levy, John Candy, Dody Goodman
directed by: Ron Howard
February 03, 2003

In the first of Ron Howard's and Tom Hanks' collaborations, Hanks stars as Allen Bauer, an unlucky in love man who travels to Cape Cod, where he meets a beautiful woman, who has a secret, she is a mermaid.

In perhaps a forgotten gem of the 80's, Howard delivers a heart warming tale about one man and his unlucky in love life, and how the extraordinary can bring out the hearts desires in a truly good funny and ultimately tale.

Hardly his best role, Hanks still delivers in a cliché hero role as Allen, someone all men can relate to. A man who needs to get over his own personal fear in his pursuit for happiness.

Daryl Hannah (Kill Bill) is excellent in the role of Madison the mermaid. The way Hannah portrays her makes you wonder how a ... Read More:

Planes, Trains And Automobiles [1987]

starring: Steve Martin, John Candy, Laila Robins, Michael McKean, Kevin Bacon
directed by: John Hughes
January 01, 1996

Amazon's review is simply wrong...

This movie is one of my favourite ever comedies, with Steve Martin and John Candy at their finest.

The movie never gets boring, the comedy is continuous.

There are parts of this movie which make make me cry with laughter no matter how many times I watch them.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone, there is some strong language in it so I wouldn't recommend it as a family movie.

Little Shop Of Horrors [1987]

starring: Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Vincent Gardenia, Steve Martin, Tichina Arnold
directed by: Frank Oz
October 01, 1999

I watched this at an early age and I still love it now and sing along to the songs as much as I ever did! With a geeky Rick Moranis and a scary Steve Martin, this film doesn't fail to please.
Although it looks like a kids film younger children might be a bit worried by the man-eating plant . . .however my kids love it ( little gore-hunters that they are!) Its bright colours and cheesy songs are the perfect antidote to a boring sunday afternoon!!!
