I have had this movie on Video for ages and have wanted the DVD, unfortunatly my only option was to buy the US version, which I have now done. This movie is one of my must sees, a very moving film, which all my friends hadnt seen before and have loved. As to the previous reviews if the book is even better, I will go and buy. This is a must for your DVD collection.

I must admit I don't like Greenaway as a rule, and I find Prospero one of Shakespeare's least appealing characters. But this film is quite extraordinary in all sorts of respects. Nyman's music is fantastic, and used here to good effect (Nyman didn't think so, and broke up with Greenaway as a result, but that's his problem). Ditto Sarah Leonard's singing. An ancient Gielgud is splendid as Prospero. Michael Clark's performance as Caliban has to be seen to be believed. The visuals are unlike anything else you have ever seen. (What sort of casting agency can come up with about 100 people aged from about 5 to about 80, all naked for all of the time? Perhaps they are the members of a naturist club? They play the "spirits" of the island.) The idea of ... Read More:

Based on R.C Sherriff's play 'Journey's end', Aces High is a gripping introduction for anyone wanting an insight into air combat during the First World war. A young Colin Firth is wonderful as the fledgling hero 'Croft' and McDowell proves once again that he is one of the U.K's most underrated actors. Christopher Plummer gives another highly polished performance.
As in Journey's end the idealistic youngster joins the unit commanded by a man well known to him and his family, his sister's fiancee, who is now a decorated and experienced fighter. The youngster's idealism fades however as he realizes that in spite of his friend's success in the war, Greasham is close to breaking point. The movie shows very well how young pilots with insufficient ... Read More:

Many great sports movies are about self-sacrifice for the sake of selfish goals. Rocky Balboa fought to prove something. Lou Gehrig wanted to persevere. Rudy Ruettiger just wanted to play for Notre Dame. They have obstacles, and by sheer will, overcome them.
Not Eric Liddell. Liddell wanted to glorify God. When he ran, he felt closer to God. When it came to winning, he wanted it to point toward God, not himself.
When questioned about his commitment as a Christian, and to his intention to return as a missionary to China, he replied, "I believe that God made me for a purpose. But He also made me fast, and when I run, I feel His pleasure." "Chariots of Fire" shows him as a man who never compromised, and followed through as an athlete ... Read More:

I LOVE this film, my favourite thing of all being Mordred. Jason Done, who plays Mordred, gets him spot-on, after watching this film he has become my favourite character! Sam Neill is magnificent as Merlin. The music is excellent, very appropriate and touching in all the right places. The acting is absolutely superb, so brilliantly performed that it is utterly believable. I have never seen such fine acting. All of the charaters are perfectly cast. The writers did an exceptional job weaving the whole story together from all the old writings and legends. Mab and Frik may have been pure invention, but they made sense and helped explain why things happened the way they did. The film quality is the best I have ever seen. The scenery was breathtaking, I don't know ... Read More:

This version of the story (and it's one of so many remakes) is a wonderful balance of humour and pathos. Let's not get too 'literary' over it - it's just an extremely good story turned into a highly enjoyable film full of quirky characters; both offbeat and slapstick humour; and a gloriuously Over The Top performance by magical Sir John - who obviously relished playing such a mischievous ghost. Other versions may be truer to the original story - but this one presses all the right buttons and leaves you looking forwards to the time when you can watch it again.

I have been raised on this play and saw many versions. I have had the real story pointed out to me and meaning behind many of the words explained. However it is this adaptation that brought it to life not just intellectually but emotionally.
One of the first things you notice is the setting is a balance between stage and reality. This film being in black and white may have contributed to the atmosphere.
The actors are not just popular names but are able to bring the characters to life. I was impressed with everyone's ability to the point that it took time to realize that Mark Antony is Marlon Brando; he among others is able to make the words real and meaningful, not just a bunch of Shakespearian phrases.
