VHS : Breaking Glass [1980]

Breaking Glass [1980]

starring: Phil Daniels, Hazel O'Connor, Jon Finch, Jonathan Pryce, Peter-Hugo Daly
directed by: Brian Gibson
April 10, 1995

Lovely punkette chanteuse Hazel O'Connor plays a blinder in the somewhat autobiographic role of Kate, desperate to succeed, whilst maintaining her ethics, in the cut-throat music business.

Hazel's brilliant songs are enough to recommend this movie in its own right but, unlike some musicals, Breaking Glass is far more than just a vehicle to promote the artiste's work. The sense of unease stoked by the rise of neo-Nazi and anarchic groups in late 70's/early 80's urban England and the shadier side of the music industry are expertly recreated here.

Furthermore, Hazel's depiction of the roller-coaster rise to stardom, resulting in mental breakdown, is impeccably observed. Why this hugely talented woman's career as an actress ... Read More:

VHS : Evita [1997]

Evita [1997]

starring: Madonna, Jonathan Pryce, Antonio Banderas, Jimmy Nail, Victoria Sus
directed by: Alan Parker
November 10, 1997

I've never seen Evita on stage, but from watching this film it becomes very obvious that that is where this story belongs, and although certain musicals have translated very well into films ('the Phantom of the Opera' and 'Hairspray' being two that spring immediatley to mind), this is one of those that I feel should have been left on stage. Saying that however, watching this film has made me very keen to see the musical in it's original format one day, and it is just a shame that it is no longer being shown in the West End.

Whenever Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice get togther for a musical, you know you're going to be in for a treat, and no matter what other reservations I have about this film, there is no doubting that musically, ... Read More:

VHS : Regeneration [1997]

Regeneration [1997]

starring: Jonathan Pryce, James Wilby, Jonny Lee Miller, Stuart Bunce, Tanya Allen
directed by: Gillies MacKinnon
September 28, 1998

I chose the title for this review from the famous poem by Wilfred Owen, because this film is poetry in itself. It's portrayal of the lives of the patients at Craig Lockhart hospital is excellent, and the characters are all strong. As Siegfried Sassoon assists Wilfred Owen in pursuing his natural talent for poetry to use it to write about the war, the audience follows the stories of Dr. Rivers, a psychiatrist doing his best to help the shell-shocked soldiers through traditional counselling methods whilst new, more animalistic treatments are developing in London, and Billy Prior, an officer attempting to overcome his optional muteness. As the lives of these different characters entwine with each other the audience can really share in the emotions of the men, ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who - The Curse Of Fatal Death [1999]

Doctor Who - The Curse Of Fatal Death [1999]

starring: Rowan Atkinson, Richard E. Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant, Joanna Lumley
directed by: John Henderson
September 06, 1999

Well fellow Doctor fans, it's all there. The crashing synthesisers. The maniacal laughter. The bad sets. The corridors. The plot twists. The Master. The Daleks. The drama. The tension! This little effort is a gem that the Doctor would wear proudly, and better still its all in a good cause. A loving satire that will have every true fan rolling on the floor. A magnificent tribute to a genre that will hopefully never die...I won't spoil it by telling you the end, but let me just say that Joanna Lumley gets my vote. As for the rest of the tape, its devoted to Doctor sketches by other greats of British comedy, and its just as good. French and Saunders were clearly connoisseurs. Highly recommended.

VHS : Tomorrow Never Dies [1997]

Tomorrow Never Dies [1997]

starring: Pierce Brosnan, Jonathan Pryce, Michelle Yeoh, Teri Hatcher, Ricky Jay
directed by: Roger Spottiswoode
November 03, 2003

After the brilliant re-start which was Goldeneye, Brosnan and the team at EON, managed something of a first for the genre with TND. Fans would never again be able to defend the low points of the series with the truism that 'even the bad ones are good', because this film (which wouldn't be lonely for long)was not just a bad James Bond film, it was was a hands down, bona fide turkey. The only thing it now has going for it is the fact that, following the release of Die Another Day, it is redeemed as only the 2nd worst James Bond film of all time...a lucky break which neither it, nor the paying public deserved...and don't even get me started on Sheryl Crow's theme tune.

VHS : Glengarry Glen Ross [1992]

Glengarry Glen Ross [1992]

starring: Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Alan Arkin, Ed Harris
directed by: James Foley
November 12, 2001

An intense filming of the Mammet play which manages both to retain its sense of theatre and remain an entertaining little movie. Did go outside the office and bar sets on occasion but did the right thing not to overdo it. This is theatre after all, meaning the dialogue and interplay of characters is what it's all about. Mammet uses very sharp language to get across the essence of the theme which is basically: the every day practice in the coal face of capitalism is really an anything goes and far from ethical state of affairs usually. The heated arena of hard real estate land sales is given the dramatic and severely critical treatment by Mammet and watching this would be a great warning to anyone who's ever suffered the hard sell and gone with the roll unwittingly, only to regret it. VHS : Jumpin' Jack Flash [1987]

Jumpin' Jack Flash [1987]

starring: Whoopi Goldberg, Stephen Collins, John Wood, Carol Kane, Annie Potts
directed by: Penny Marshall
May 10, 1990

I have always loved this film!! It was the first film Whoopee was the lead in and she certainly is the lead in this film - in fact she makes this film her own and none of the other actors even get a look in.
It is such a funny action packed move from start to finish and it hasn't dated since it first was released back in 1986.
If you like Whoopee or comedy in general then you will really like this film. There isn't a film like it out there today, this is such a gem of a movie that I feel everyone should own this masterpiece. it's like Sister Act in the funny stakes so if that makes you laugh then this will make you laugh harder!!

VHS : The Rachel Papers [1989]

The Rachel Papers [1989]

starring: Dexter Fletcher, Ione Skye, Jonathan Pryce, James Spader, Bill Paterson
directed by: Damian Harris
February 10, 1992

This film is better than I remembered it. It's quite funny. Jonathan Pryce (Norman) is very amusing.

It has the advantage of not being formulaic. Perhaps its being British helped it to avoid a cheesy ending being tacked on at the last minute. However, perhaps because it is based on a novel from the 1970s, it is not what I would think of a typical "1980s British film". Oh, the hair and the music are quite 1980s, and it is definitely set in the past. It dates to the era when one could, like Charles (Dexter Fletcher) and Rachel (Ione Skye) go to an art gallery and see a TIDY bed.

The sense of place is more distinct than the sense of time. Our protagonist could almost be a younger relative of Hugh Grant's character in "4 Weddings": both charming Englishmen fixated on indecisive ... Read More:

This is one of those films few people remember, and the ones that do, are left wondering why. This is one of the best films I watched when I was a kid, it's mint as.
To be fair, if I watched it now...probably not nearly as good..kinda like neverending story....but still!! quality!
