VHS : The Sword In The Stone (1963) (Disney)

The Sword In The Stone (1963) (Disney)

starring: Rickie Sorensen, Sebastian Cabot, Karl Swenson, Junius Matthews, Ginny Tyler
directed by: Wolfgang Reitherman
May 23, 1995

We had this on video when I was a child and I watched it so many times that the tape got worn out and I couldn't anymore. I was heartbroken! and also very glad to see it now available on DVD!

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Archimedes yet - he and Merlin vie for best character in my opinion. A fluffy, pompous, talking owl! Quote:
'Archimedes - you saved my life!'
*looks grumpy* 'Pf pf pf pf pf, I was going to eat you.'

VHS : The Hanging Tree [1959]

The Hanging Tree [1959]

starring: Gary Cooper, Maria Schell, Karl Malden, George C. Scott, Karl Swenson
directed by: Karl Malden, Delmer Daves
April 27, 1998

OK western - if somewhat unusual - about Gary Cooper playing the part of a doctor arriving at a goldminer's camp. He's past makes it impossible for him to have close human relationships. Director is Delmer Daves and the movie has fine part for Maria Schell, playing a Swiss woman, lost in the west. Not bad.

VHS : Vanishing Point [1971]

Vanishing Point [1971]

starring: Barry Newman, Cleavon Little, Dean Jagger, Victoria Medlin, Paul Koslo
directed by: Richard C. Sarafian
July 07, 1997

Did anyone ever see the 1997 made for TV version of Vanishing Point? It stars the as yet unknown Viggo Mortensen as Kowalski and had the only two changes needed to make it a criminal travesty:

1) They gave Kowalski a reason to be hurtling from Denver to California - because his missus was having a baby.

2) They actually had the bare faced nerve to allow him to complete the journey on time to create a happy ending.

Vanishing Point (this proper 1971 version as the re-make should be deleted from history) is a counter culture classic of such awesome proportions that I can only weep that I will never EVER make anything this good.

The plot? A chap decides that he is going to deliver a souped up Dodge ... Read More:

VHS : Ulzana's Raid [1972]

Ulzana's Raid [1972]

starring: Burt Lancaster, Bruce Davison, Jorge Luke, Richard Jaeckel, Joaquín Martínez
directed by: Robert Aldrich
August 08, 1994

Ulzana's Raid follows a cavalry patrolled by Bruce Davison's idealistic but inexperienced West Pointer and guided by Lancaster's scout in their pursuit of a small band of Apaches who have left the reservation to rekindle their `power' by torturing and killing as many settlers as they can find. It's a stark, brilliant film that is a notable influence on Walter Hill's Geronimo (which even borrows from it directly on a couple of occasions), but has a level of cruelty that the later film lacks. Unlike its contemporaries which took up the Native American cause, this never idealises or demonises either side: even Lancaster's scout proves catastrophically less competent in matters of strategy than in tracking or attempting to explain the enemy's way of thinking. ... VHS : North To Alaska [1961]

North To Alaska [1961]

starring: John Wayne, Stewart Granger, Ernie Kovacs, Fabian, Capucine
directed by: Henry Hathaway
March 23, 1998

Hathaway's genial directing style, with its frequently rich mise-en-scene, seemed to suit Wayne's later career, and some of the films which resulted remain firm favourites today. Before the overrated True Grit (1969) and the underrated Sons of Katie Elder (1965) came this typically rumbustious piece. Wayne's first real foray into self-mocking comedy, North to Alaska is not as broad humoured as McLagen's McLintock! (1963) but still suffers from a degree of sexism which some modern viewers may find annoying, others just ironic. It is redeemed by being a very good natured film with a strong set of performances by the central cast, as well as some handsome production values.

It's interesting that the film opens as the all-important `strike', at least ... Read More:

VHS : Flaming Star [1960]

Flaming Star [1960]

starring: Elvis Presley, Barbara Eden, Steve Forrest, Dolores del Rio, John McIntire
directed by: Don Siegel
August 04, 1997

I saw "Flaming Star" for the first time ever in June 2003! I can now agree with the other reviewers who have said that Elvis's films "Flaming Star", "King Creole" and "Wild in the Country" demonstrate that he truly had what it takes to be a really good actor in movies. I think that his efforts in "Follow That Dream" and "Kid Galahad" were quite respectable too. All of these movies had their flaws, but they had redeeming features too. In "Flaming Star" all the best moments, I reckon, come in the first half of the movie when the plot is taut, the acting and the dialogue is convincing, and the tension builds. Somehow though it seems to sag and then to peter out as though the author (who co-wrote the screenplay) didn't really know what to do with and how to end the ... Read More:
