VHS : The Great Race [1965]

The Great Race [1965]

starring: Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk, Keenan Wynn
directed by: Blake Edwards
February 19, 2001

I've always liked this film and thought it a great pity there had been no Region 2 release on DVD.
This cracking tale of dastardly deeds and deceit is a marvellous race to reach the next gag. And there is never long to wait!!
Through a plethora of cultures and engaging social backgrounds, the tale never seems to peak, until the fantastic pie fight.
A well re-mastered film, although the soundtrack did seem to fade in places.
However, top marks.

VHS : Dr. Strangelove [1963]

Dr. Strangelove [1963]

starring: Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, Keenan Wynn, Slim Pickens
directed by: Stanley Kubrick
July 01, 2002

"In the days after it first opened in early 1964, Stanley Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove" took on the enchanted aura of a film that had gotten away with something. Johnson was in the White House, the Republicans were grooming Goldwater, both sides took the Cold War with grim solemnity, and the world was learning to be comfortable with the term "nuclear deterrent," which meant that if you blow me up, I'm gonna blow you up, and then we'll all be dead. "Better dead than Red," some said. Others said the opposite. The choice was not appealing. The Bomb overshadowed global politics. It was a kind of ultimate hole card in a game where the stakes were life on earth." Roger Ebert

I purchased the 40th Anniversary CD and this is my third or forth ... Read More:

VHS : Kiss Me Kate [1953]

Kiss Me Kate [1953]

starring: Howard Keel, Kathryn Grayson, Ann Miller, Keenan Wynn
directed by: George Sidney
October 01, 2000

I had been searching for this version of Kiss Me Kate for ages and finally found it. A great version of the play(Taming of the Shrew) within a play this combines comedy, dancing, singing and a wonderful score by Cole Porter. It is one of MGM's wonderful fifties musicals. Howard Keel as Fred/Petruchio is terrific & Kathryn Grayson(Lily/Kate) is no slouch either. Ann Miller & Tommy Rall as secondary leads have marvellous dance routines but the real highlight is the performance of 'Brush up your Shakespeare' by Keenan Wynn and James Whitmore as the gangsters sent to collect a debt from Fred. I have seen live performances of 'Kate' but this is the best ever.

VHS : The Mechanic [1972]

The Mechanic [1972]

starring: Charles Bronson, Jan-Michael Vincent, Keenan Wynn, Jill Ireland, Linda Ridgeway
directed by: Michael Winner
September 22, 1997

The Mechanic aka Killer of Killers (the title was changed to boost business with people who might have mistaken the original title for a car chase movie) is surprisingly good and, unusually for Michael Winner, also surprisingly well directed. A one-time Cliff Robertson vehicle (which at least explains the pipe Charles Bronson smokes throughout the film) and a clear influence on the Wachowski Brothers later script for Assassins, it sees Charles Bronson as the mob's most assured and ingenious hitman for some reason taking on an apprentice, attracted perhaps by his sociopathic indifference to death. The first half of the film is so sharp that it's a shame the rest of the movie starts down a more conventional road, but the action is well-handled, with a couple ... Read More:

Point Blank [1967]

starring: Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson, Keenan Wynn, Carroll O'Connor, Lloyd Bochner
directed by: John Boorman
May 15, 2000

When his buddy, Mal Reese, with his wife, Lynne, looking on, puts two bullets into Walker right after they've high-jacked a big haul on Alcatraz island, Walker gets mad...and then gets even. Walker somehow survives those gunshots and a year later he returns. For the next hour and a half, Walker (Lee Marvin) is going to say once if he says it ten times, "I want my money back." The Organization is not about to accommodate Walker, even if Walker's money is only a measly $93,000. That includes Reese, who now has Walker's wife and who has become one of the Organization's top men, all of whom look like business CEOs. While Walker relentlessly goes after his money and works his way up the corporate criminal ladder, he leaves a trail of corpses behind. Walker is shrewd, ... Read More:

VHS : The Three Musketeers [1948]

The Three Musketeers [1948]

starring: Lana Turner, Gene Kelly, June Allyson, Van Heflin, Angela Lansbury
directed by: George Sidney
November 05, 1990

For the first non-musical I've seen Gene Kelly in this was surprisingly good, and it is easy to see why out of all his non-musical films this was Gene Kelly's personal favorite. It fails to impress however in some important ways (this is just an opinion from a die-hard fan of the Oliver Reed/Michael York version) I found some of the musketeer costumes a bit hard to swallow those bright pastel colours detracted somewhat from the belivability I felt. From MGM it was probably expected to have an abundance of colour but for me it detracted from the realism. The sword play was very well choreographed. Another failing might just be true of my copy but the sound in the big fight at Milady's chateau was ever so slightly out of sync. But the main failing of this film was it was ... Read More:

My mother gave me this film for xmas when I was about 8 or 9 & I loved it, watched it all the time. My 5 year old daughter is obsessed with unicorns so when I saw the video in the window of a junk shop in the summer hols I couldnt resist it. A quid well spent, she loves it! It warms my heart to hear her sing along to the soundtrack (I've just ordered that for her birthday next week) & I cant help but sing along with her.
A beautiful animation & a must for any little girl.

VHS : Finian's Rainbow [1968]

Finian's Rainbow [1968]

starring: Fred Astaire, Petula Clark, Tommy Steele, Don Francks, Keenan Wynn
directed by: Francis Ford Coppola
March 27, 2000

My Mum forced me to watch this movie when I was younger and I loved it. I learned all the words and even the stupid "Doom and Gloom" cry from the leprechaun. Then I grew up and forgot about it until one day I uttered those fateful words - "Doom and Gloom!" I was so happy to find it on amazon and bought it immediately. The movie is so much more funnier than I remember though the songs are rather cheesy - but that is what makes it a fantastic movie. This movie made me fall in love with Tommy Steele and Fred Astaire and it also made me dream about my crock of gold. Wonder where I left it now?
