VHS : Road to Perdition [2002]

Road to Perdition [2002]

starring: Tom Hanks, Tyler Hoechlin, Rob Maxey, Liam Aiken, Jennifer Jason Leigh
directed by: Sam Mendes

My header says it all, I knew it was going to be good, I mean how could it not be? Tom hanks, Paul Newman.....Jude Law? Without giving too much away, Hanks plays a hit man for the mob lead by Newman, whom is also a father figure to Hanks, favouring him over his own son played by Daniel Craig...

The plot thickens when things turn sour due to the immature and irresponsible actions of Craig which have catastrophic consequences for all involved, especially when the terrifyingly deadly skills of Hanks comes to the fore.

The film however is not all violence, and in fact is truly a heart warming stroy of father and son bonding between Hanks and his son, finding themselves thrust into a situation which neither want, they decide ... Read More:

VHS : Henry Fool [1998]

Henry Fool [1998]

starring: Thomas Jay Ryan, James Urbaniak, Parker Posey, Maria Porter, James Saito
directed by: Hal Hartley
July 01, 2002

One tries not to throw the word brilliant around too often, as doing so robs the word of any meaning, so I am quite sincere when I bestow the word brilliant on this remarkable film - after all, what is artistic brilliance if not the ability to call forth beauty from the midst of ugliness? This story takes place against a depressing backdrop of poverty, desperation, and dysfunction. Simon Grim (James Urbaniak) works as a garbage man, endures physical attacks on the streets, and comes home each night to a thoroughly dysfunctional family. His mother is obviously depressed and, at times, nonresponsive, while his sister Faye (Parker Posey) is irresponsible and only interested in fulfilling her own [...] needs as often as possible. Simon himself seems anti ... Read More:

VHS : The Object Of My Affection [1998]

The Object Of My Affection [1998]

starring: Jennifer Aniston, Paul Rudd, Kali Rocha, Lena Cardwell, Natalie B. Kikkenborg
directed by: Nicholas Hytner
January 31, 2000

I read the book of The Object of my Affection before I saw the film and I have to say that I had pretty high standards as I sat there and waited for it to come on. I also have to say that it met, and went past, all of those standards. It's a brilliant film, and Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd played Nina and George really well.

VHS : Stepmom [1999]

Stepmom [1999]

starring: Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon, Ed Harris, Jena Malone, Liam Aiken
directed by: Chris Columbus

This is a great plane film. You can turn in and out to it and every time Susan Sarandon will still be bravely holding it together and Julia Robers will be sweetly proving she can also be a good mom. Then at the end you'll probably cry in spite of yourself.

VHS : I Dreamed of Africa

I Dreamed of Africa

starring: Kim Basinger, Vincent Perez, Liam Aiken, Garrett Strommen, Eva Marie Saint
directed by: Hugh Hudson

Let's start with the beautiful: magnificent use of the African landscape, an enchanting musical score, the touching relationship depicted by Vicent Perez and Liam Aiken.

The controversial: based on the true story of a European woman remaining in Africa despite various tragedies, it raises many important questions about the confrontation of personal project vs family that are not sufficiently approached - extremely interesting food for thought and a wonderful trigger for post-movie discussion.

The good: brilliant performances by all actors, with my special preference going to Eve Saint (remember her with Marlon Brando way back?), Liam Aiken and Daniel Craig (in a small but highly accomplished role, as usual). Perez and Basinger are good at the ... Read More:

Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events [2004]

starring: Jim Carrey, Jude Law, Emily Browning, Liam Aiken, Kara Hoffman
directed by: Brad Silberling
December 26, 2005

The books this is based on are good. I read a great deal, I'm a librarian for god's sake, and I can tell you these books are good, for kids and for adults who aren't afraid of looking a little silly buying them for themselves.

I was very excited when I heard about the film and wondered who they could get to play all the characters, complete nobodies for the kids (obviously) 'but just lets hope they can act' thought I. But then the biggy, Count Olaf. I couldn't think of anyone, and then I heard that rubber faced Jim Carrey had landed the part and it all clicked into place. Absolutely fantastic casting, it matters not a jot that most of his acting is gurning caricatures. That is what Olaf does; he's a bad actor who thinks ... Read More:
