VHS : The Prince Of Egypt [1998]

The Prince Of Egypt [1998]

starring: Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Goldblum
directed by: Brenda Chapman, Simon Wells, Steve Hickner
February 16, 2000

I'm not religious in any sense of the word, so my review will be based purely on the film placed in front of me, and not on any historical innacuracies and deviances from the actual story, or any religious implications in the film.

I was blown away by this film to be honest. The story, the voice acting, the animation, it was all faultless, and though the songs took a bit of getting used to (they didn't seem to have that sweet, flowing quality I was used to seeing in most cartoon musicals) the soundtrack fits the film incredibly well, with the obvious standout song of 'there can be miracles' made famous by Mariah carey and whitney Houston. One fault I did have however was the script, which at times felt slightly awkward, but the ... Read More:

VHS : The Witches Of Eastwick [1987]

The Witches Of Eastwick [1987]

starring: Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer, Veronica Cartwright
directed by: George Miller
September 22, 1989

There are plenty of customer reviews of this superb film already - wonderful acting by all the cast; great directing and a deft adaptation, though it takes liberties with Updike's novel. An absolute classic which is great fun to watch again and again.

My gripe, here, is with the print of the Warner Home Video DVD. Poor picture quality, particularly in the first half hour, is a huge disappointment. And the sound is not that good, either. The age of the film is no excuse. I watched, the day before, an immaculate and sparkling print of the Bette Davis classic NOW VOYAGER, so if a 1940s movie can look that good, Warners should have done better with this 1987 film.

This happens time and again with a good many DVDs. Often ... Read More:

VHS : Batman Returns [1992]

Batman Returns [1992]

starring: Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Michael Gough
directed by: Tim Burton
October 01, 1999

What I extremely like about "Batman" (1989) bounces back again in "Batman Returns": schizophrenic characters (in "Batman" there were at least two super-schizophrenics - I shouldn't name them, should I? - but here there are distinctive three of them), enchanting atmosphere (the sets are beautiful, "gothically" menacing, and simply outstanding), cool acting (when I say "cool acting" I mean my absolute inability to poke finger at the characters with disrespect and contempt; quite the other way round: I do respect all the characters here, while they are never goofy, stupid, or over-sentimental), great action scenes (fighting against the hordes of clowns, great acrobatic stunts - I am especially happy with that scene where clowns are jumping onto the Xmas tree ... Dangerous Minds [1996]

starring: Michelle Pfeiffer, George Dzundza, Courtney B. Vance, Robin Bartlett, Beatrice Winde
directed by: John N. Smith
January 17, 2000

A fantastic movie, a bit clichéd for today's times but quite breakthrough in 1995. Well acted, well written, funny at times, serious at other times. Altogether well balanced.

Except the end. I mean, seriously ... what happened at the end??? I know that she left for her "reasons" but it is never actually clear what her reasons are. Is she leaving because she's upset at Emilio's death? Is she upset at the 'system' and it's lack of flexibility? Is she bored with helping these kids?? I don't actually know! The ending seems way too sudden, as if the producers ran out of money and had to finish the film by the end of the day. The movie took the perfect amount of time getting itself introduced. The pace was good, until Emilio's death. I don't know ... the ending ... Read More:

VHS : Wolf [1994]

Wolf [1994]

starring: Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Spader, Kate Nelligan, Richard Jenkins
directed by: Mike Nichols
July 01, 2002

The opening sequences are beautifully filmed, and the moon and snow look gorgeous. The plot made sense, despite a few quibbles. I doubt anyone could really have found out that much information about animal possession in such a short time. Plus, I really think Laura should wear a hard hat when her horse is going faster than a walk.

It took a bit of mental gymnastics for me to work out that Jack Nicholson was actually playing a good guy. Prunella Scales has a cameo (in a memorable outfit) and David Schwimmer has a bit part. Michelle Pfeiffer conveys not just Laura's self-possession, but also the bleakness of her existence. Near the end, she portrays Laura's strength and confidence very effectively.

However, my favourite part of the film is when James ... Read More:

VHS : The Age Of Innocence [1993]

The Age Of Innocence [1993]

starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Winona Ryder, Alexis Smith, Geraldine Chaplin
directed by: Martin Scorsese
July 01, 2002

I am rating this movie three stars as the result of some complicated mathematics, of which the detail is as follows:

- basically, this is a ONE star movie. Why? Because in this movie virtually NOTHING happens! And this is a REEEAAAAALLLLYYYYY long one - 132 minutes is not a small thing to swallow, believe me, I know! Now, this kind of movie can be very dangerous. The first time I went to see it, I was with a date. Now, this date was to become later my fiance, then my bride, my life companion and ultimately the mother of my children. All of which almost didn't happen, because of this movie! Even now, after all this time, my wife reminds me "The Age of Innocence" disaster if she wants to put me down. So, be warned - this is a VERY long nothing!

- I must give however ... Read More:

VHS : What Lies Beneath [2000]

What Lies Beneath [2000]

starring: Harrison Ford, Michelle Pfeiffer, Diana Scarwid, Joe Morton, James Remar
directed by: Robert Zemeckis
September 17, 2001

"Midnight Lace" was a little known Doris Day thriller where an American woman living in London was menaced by a threatening voice which came out of the London fog. Her greatest difficulty was getting people to believe that the threats were not something she had imagined.

In that sense, "What lies beneath" is very similar. It is clear that housewife Claire Spencer, Michelle Pfeiffer, is struggling to cope with her life. Still coming to terms with her only daughter leaving home, Claire had given up her own career to marry Dr Norman Spencer, Harrison Ford, and now found herself playing distinctly second fiddle to his.

Rattling about in a house far too large for her, and with only herself to think about, Claire becomes increasingly paranoid as mysterious things start to occur. The ... Read More:

directed by: Rob Reiner
June 04, 2001

I enjoyed Bruce and Michelle's acting so much in this movie. This movie is about children, love and middle ages. I saw this moive in a theater at first, and I didn't regret one cent of the money I spent. Also, Supporting actors were fantastic as well.
But I wouldn't recommend this movie to action movie lovers.
