What a wonderful series this was enjoyed and remembered very well by all family members.
We wanted to own a copy on DVD.
We were very surprised indeed when we found that it has not yet to be placed on to the magic of DVD.
Why is this so?
Shame on you BBC please hurry along or the Puffer Para Handy will sink without trace .
Looking forward to a DVD release date in the very near future.

VHS : Regeneration [1997]

Regeneration [1997]

starring: Jonathan Pryce, James Wilby, Jonny Lee Miller, Stuart Bunce, Tanya Allen
directed by: Gillies MacKinnon
September 28, 1998

I chose the title for this review from the famous poem by Wilfred Owen, because this film is poetry in itself. It's portrayal of the lives of the patients at Craig Lockhart hospital is excellent, and the characters are all strong. As Siegfried Sassoon assists Wilfred Owen in pursuing his natural talent for poetry to use it to write about the war, the audience follows the stories of Dr. Rivers, a psychiatrist doing his best to help the shell-shocked soldiers through traditional counselling methods whilst new, more animalistic treatments are developing in London, and Billy Prior, an officer attempting to overcome his optional muteness. As the lives of these different characters entwine with each other the audience can really share in the emotions ... Read More:

VHS : Sliding Doors [1998]

Sliding Doors [1998]

starring: Gwyneth Paltrow, John Hannah, John Lynch, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Zara Turner
directed by: Peter Howitt
June 07, 1999

I admit that the first time I saw this movie I didn't like it at all. Now it is several years later and I have watched almost all of John Hannah's work, so I caught this movie on cable television. On my second viewing and much to my surprise, I absolutely loved it! I was already familiar with Gwyneth Paltrow's work. She is a very talented actress. Now, I also think John Hannah is a very talented actor.

As (Helen), Gwyneth Paltrow was smart, energetic, sexy yet sweet, very pretty, made the best of each situation, and sometimes made mistakes. She was a totally likable character.

As (James), John Hannah gets embarrassed and says silly things in the movie like, "never end a sentence with a preposition - must look up in my English ... Read More:

VHS : Lorna Doone [1990]

Lorna Doone [1990]

starring: Michael MacKenzie, Andrew Ferguson, Sean Bean, Claire Madden, Clive Owen
directed by: Andrew Grieve
May 06, 2002

Yes this version takes liberties with the book, cutting away much of the historical detail. But it works (or I am a philistine) allowing dramatic licence to hold sway over historical accuracy (the book is overly long anyway, and would have benefitted from some serious editing). I remember watching this as a little girl one winter's afternoon and thinking how impossibly romantic. It really brings to life the story and the sense of wildness that surrounds Exmoor.

This is far superior to the recent BBC version--with its lacklustre protaganists and little chemistry between the leads. Here the romance sparks, we have a headstrong and wilful Lorna, willing to risk her very life to be with John-- far better than Amelia Warner's pitifully bland performance. ... Read More:

Complicity [2000]

starring: Jonny Lee Miller, Brian Cox, Keeley Hawes, Paul Higgins, Jason Hetherington
directed by: Gavin Millar
October 16, 2000

I think the title of this review sum up my opinion. The complexity of the storyline was lost in this adaptation. The facts and details that were changed, removed the edge that this novel had originally.

However, God bless Brian Cox who brought talent to the uninspiring cast. His performance alone envoked an emotional reaction out of me.

VHS : Paternity [1981]

Paternity [1981]

starring: Burt Reynolds, Beverly D'Angelo, Norman Fell, Paul Dooley, Elizabeth Ashley
directed by: David Steinberg
September 20, 1993

Burt plays the wealthy manager of Madison Square Garden and is New York's most eligible batchelor. Despite his health, wealth and popularity, he is un-married but yearns for children, so he sets out on the task of finding a surrogate mother. Burt plays the part well in his more mature, funnily romantic role, with plenty of black comedy. If you are a Burt fan you will recognise many of his usual co-stars and some classicly pretty ladies.
Great for a quiet, light hearted afternoon or evening!

VHS : Stephen King's The Tommyknockers [1993]

Stephen King's The Tommyknockers [1993]

starring: Jimmy Smits, Marg Helgenberger, John Ashton, Allyce Beasley, Robert Carradine
directed by: John Power (II)
August 14, 1995

Being a huge King fan I was delighted that they chose to bring The Kommyknockers to the screen. In my opinion (who else :P ) the character casting is magnificent. Gard, played by Jimmy Smits, captures the books characterization perfectly as does Marg Helgenberger portraying Bobbi Anderson. My only dissappointment (and it's a large one, hence the missing 5th star) is that, presumably, the budget was insufficient to run to accurately depicting the excavation of the space craft. Instead, a sad arrangement of glowing cubes has to suffice in place of the gigantuan saucer, which is a pity, as this constitutes no small element of the novel.
