VHS : The Addams Family [1991]

The Addams Family [1991]

starring: Barry Sonnenfeld|Anjelica Huston|Raul Julia|Christopher Lloyd
June 01, 1998

I'm pretty sure the last time I saw this film I must have been less than 6 years old, and now over 13 years later, I caught this film on TV and decided to re-visit the family that, I have been told, as a kid I not only adored watching on film but on the cartoon tv series too. Well, what can I say - I'm sure this stuff must have had some sort of diverse effect on my mental well-being as a child, and I can say honestly had an effect on my sense of humour - I find this kind of stuff hilarious.

Don't get me wrong, this film isn't great by any stretch of the immagination. The plot is horrifically predictable, the film just isn't very exciting, never seeming to go anywhere, never raising my excitement or getting me personally involved. ... Read More:

VHS : The Rookie [1990]

The Rookie [1990]

starring: Clint Eastwood, Charlie Sheen, Raul Julia, Sonia Braga, Tom Skerritt
directed by: Clint Eastwood
June 23, 1997

Clint Eastwood on automatic pilot is a lot better than some peoples best films, so make no mistake this may be the worst film ever that he directed himself but its still pretty good. In fact for me it would have been 3.5 stars.

Its really a Dirty Harry film under another name, and with a decent cast including the always watchable Charlie Sheen its an easy way to pass an hour and a half. There are a couple of laugh out loud moments, especially the seat belt gag.

Of course the reason to watch the film is the man himself. Aged 61 when this was made he was still in top shape and is effortlessly cool throughout the film. Some of the dialogue isn't as good as that in the classic Dirty Harry films but there's still enough laconic ... Read More:

VHS : Kiss of the Spider Woman

Kiss of the Spider Woman

starring: William Hurt, Raul Julia, Sonia Braga, José Lewgoy, Milton Gonçalves
directed by: Hector Babenco

An electrifying performance by Hurt is the center piece of this movie. He plays a gay prisoner who shares a cell with a straight political activist (Julia). They form a meaningful relationship, with each using his own perspective to cope. Hurt fantasizes about old Hollywood movies. Director Babenco brilliantly meshes illusion and reality to take us through the story.

VHS : Addams Family Values [1993]

Addams Family Values [1993]

starring: Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Joan Cusack, Christina Ricci
directed by: Barry Sonnenfeld
October 02, 2000

This is far superior to the first movie and to any other adaptation since. I can never decide what is best... following Uncle Festers storyline or the kids at camp, but why settle when the two merge so well in this easily quoted sequel.

Every line is a classic, and watching it again when your old enough to 'get' all the jokes that flew by you as a kid makes you appreciate it more.

If you were a fan as a child, buy it. If you have children of your own who have not seen it... MAKE THEM :) they will thank you.

It is such a shame the dvd has no commentary or anything interesting on it. I have hoped for a better release but the movie itself is worth more than any extras... still it would be nice.

VHS : Frankenstein Unbound [1991]

Frankenstein Unbound [1991]

starring: Roger Corman|John Hurt|Raul Julia|Nick Brimble
July 17, 1995

Joseph Buchanan enters the past through a gateway in a cloud during a storm. He is transported together with his "knightrider" type car back to the early nineteenth century. He hides the car and goes to explore, wandering into a "dracula" type scenario with people going about their ordinary daily business in a small village. Firstly, he meets Victor Frankenstein in an Inn and starts to discuss his work, much to Frankenstein's amazement, as his work is "unknown". Then, Buchanan meets Mary (not yet married to Percy Shelley) at a witch trial. She is surprised that he knows her book as she has only written a few chapters and is unpublished. Later, she goes for a ride in his "electric carriage".

In essence the film is similar to a dream with historical fact ... Read More:
