VHS : Nuts In May [1976]

Nuts In May [1976]

starring: Roger Sloman, Anthony O'Donnell, Sheila Kelley, Eric Allan, Stephen Bill
directed by: Mike Leigh

I had never heard of this film, but I first watched it a couple of years ago and it blew me away. This is now firmly establised as one of my favourite films of all time. Whilst I know that many people will not understand the film, I now actually judge people on whether they like this film or not. I have changed my views on my own friends through watching this superb film. People who do not like this film are simpleton's in my view, and example of this is my friend Wikey. He does not like this film, and therefore I like him less as I know his brain does not have enough capacity to understand the subtle humour this film provides.

It is best to watch this film when you are slightly tipsy, and it always gets me howling with laughter. ... Read More:

VHS : Tombstone [1993]

Tombstone [1993]

starring: Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe
directed by: George P. Cosmatos
November 01, 1994

Tombstone is an immensely enjoyable western. And this version - the Vista series / Director's Cut - is the best one to get. I ordered it from the USA and it came in immaculate condition in an amazingly short time; but what's on it?

There are 3 bite sized featurettes (about 10 mins each): An Ensemble Cast; Making An Authentic Western; The Gunfight at the OK Corral. There is an Interactive Timeline of the actual events as they took place, Director's Storyboards, an Actual Newspaper Account (which you navigate around to read in your own time), a DVD-Rom featuring the game of Faro (the game Wyatt Earp runs in the film), also a fold out map of the actual layout of Tombstone including the OK Corral, an Insert booklet and not least - a director's ... VHS : Ravenous [1999]

Ravenous [1999]

starring: Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle, David Arquette, Jeremy Davies, Jeffrey Jones
directed by: Antonia Bird
September 25, 2000

Some think trooper is best prepared boiled, with turnips, potatoes and cabbage. Others recommend that trooper be slow braised in red wine and onions, a kind of trooper bourguignon, which will produce a deep red sauce. Most, however, speak to trooper served simply, with a slight dusting of salt if available, and as fresh as can be.
--From Recipes for the Ravenous, from Ribald Rangers to Raw Recruits

With the exception of the last 10 minutes, Ravenous is a fine movie, full of revoltingly intelligent horror, with a disgustingly vivid storyline and nauseatingly moist close-ups. It's one of the best-photographed movies I've seen in a long time, and not just because of the entrails and caked blood. The movie looks cold to the bone, even inside the snow ... Read More:

Groundhog Day [1993]

starring: Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott, Stephen Tobolowsky, Brian Doyle-Murray

One of my favourite films. This has incredible one liners, great slapstick, Bill Murray at his best and a really strange but completely great premise behind the whole thing.

Superb.

VHS : Still Crazy [1998]

Still Crazy [1998]

starring: Stephen Rea, Billy Connolly, Jimmy Nail, Timothy Spall, Bill Nighy
directed by: Brian Gibson
July 01, 2002

I really enjoyed this movie, which worked for me on several levels, or at least across several generations. I was there in the seventies listening to bands like Strange Fruit, and the film got the feel of those times right. Now I'm an old geezer like the band members, and the film got the feel of that right too. Connolly as roadie was a good choice, providing a salty anchor for the sometimes thin narrative.

One thing that seems 'off' about the way the film was promoted is the praise heaped on Mick Jones (Spooky Tooth, Foreigner) and Chris Difford (Squeeze) for the great music. Their names don't even appear in the IMDB listing for the film and I got the impression that the real force behind the music was Steve Donnelly, who is credited with the all important "Brian's Theme" on the soundtrack ... VHS : Patton [1969]

Patton [1969]

starring: George C. Scott, Karl Malden, Stephen Young, Michael Strong, Carey Loftin
directed by: Franklin J. Schaffner
February 23, 1998

There's a lot to recommend this, and it's a great film. The scale of the movie is as epic as the giant ego leading the Third Army around Europe. Patton was clearly one of a kind, a brilliant leader who had a fantastic way with words, and possibly the least subtle human being alive.

The screenplay is extremely good and the filming is superb. You really feel what is going on in WWII events of the time, and Patton's frustration and will to fight is what drove him and his men.

George C Scott won an Oscar, he should've won about twelve.

VHS : Spy Game [2001]

Spy Game [2001]

starring: Robert Redford, Brad Pitt, Catherine McCormack, Stephen Dillane, Larry Bryggman
directed by: Tony Scott
September 30, 2002

Spy Game is everything we're not supposed to expect from a major Hollywood movie: engrossing, intelligent, well written, acted and directed. But that's just what it is and more, this is definitely the best thing I've seen since Memento. Although Pitt is really good and Redford plays himself as well as he has in years, I think the most credit should go to Tony Scott. In the hands of a lesser director this could have been something more like Mission Impossible. But Scott stays right on target, keeping us interested, developing the characters, and keeping the pacing nearly perfect. Scott also shows us that he's stayed with the times: he employs the full array of modern camera tricks like fast motion, reverse zooms and funky lenses but in a way that actually makes the film better instead of being an annoying distraction. ... VHS : Brass - Complete First Series [1983]

Brass - Complete First Series [1983]

starring: Stephen Bill
directed by: Les Chatfield
September 25, 2000

Ok I'm not supposed to slag off Brideshead, which I've seen many times and like Brass is produced by Granada but Brass really takes the on BH and all the period drama. Full of double entendre and old fashioned decent comedy it would bring a smile to anyone.
