VHS : Beyond The Clouds [1994] [1997]

Beyond The Clouds [1994] [1997]

starring: Fanny Ardant, Chiara Caselli, Irène Jacob, John Malkovich, Sophie Marceau
directed by: Michelangelo Antonioni, Wim Wenders
June 23, 1997

The first time I watched this film I was slightly bored - couldn't understand what was being said or why. However, having watched it again recently I took each 'story' at face value and found myself thoroughly enjoying the beautiful camera work and actually making some sense of what the film was about and the various themes at play.

if you're not interested in watching films about the genesis of ideas, this is definitely not for you, but if you just want to sit back and watch a couple of hours of beautiful film making, I would reccomend it.

Time Regained [2000]

starring: Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle Béart, Vincent Perez, John Malkovich, Pascal Greggory
directed by: Raoul Ruiz
June 12, 2000

Boringly self-indulgent French crap. I have nothing against french films, as some are in my top list (Jean de Florette, etc). But this was so terribly boring that I could only watch it at x4 speed, to see if anything mildly interesting might develop - it didn't.

My first wasted film hire!

VHS : Le Bossu [1998]

Le Bossu [1998]

starring: Daniel Auteuil, Fabrice Luchini, Vincent Perez, Marie Gillain, Yann Collette
directed by: Philippe de Broca
April 12, 1999

Philippe de Broca's 1997 version of Le Bossu (aka On Guard), an oft-filmed warhorse of French cinema, is probably the best of the bunch. Daniel Auteuil is the sword-for-hire who finds himself sworn to avenge the death of Vincent Perez's amiably pompous aristocrat and to restore his daughter to her inheritance, purloined by Perez's evil cousin (Fabrice Lucini). Shades of Scaramouche ensue as they hide out with a group of travelling players, Auteuil working his way into Lucini's confidence by disguising himself as a hunchback (many businessmen used to hire hunchbacks because it was believed lucky to touch their humps or sign contracts on their backs!). The first half is a little awkward in tone, with Auteuil overdoing the youthful enthusiasm ... Read More:

VHS : Amy Foster aka Swept From The Sea [1998]

Amy Foster aka Swept From The Sea [1998]

starring: Vincent Perez, Rachel Weisz, Ian McKellen, Joss Ackland, Kathy Bates
directed by: Beeban Kidron
July 01, 2002

Took me ten years to catch this film had no idea what I had missed.
The film was given to me because of my deep love of Cornwall, in truth I would watch just about any old tripe if it included shots of the Cornish coast I love so dear. This coast has been an inspiration for artists for centuries. On a visit to Cornwall an inspired Richard Wagner wrote the greatest opera ever written - Tristan and Isolde.

Joseph Conrad in his story Amy Foster was at his most insightful. It is largely a story about 'difference' and how a shipwrecked stranger can be treated with hostility by the local community to the point where this endangers his life, Conrad was himself a polish immigrant to England. Amy, for quite diverse reasons is also an 'outsider' ... Read More:

VHS : La Reine Margot (1993)

La Reine Margot (1993)

starring: Isabelle Adjani, Daniel Auteuil, Jean-Hugues Anglade, Vincent Perez, Virna Lisi
directed by: Patrice Chéreau
August 07, 1995

If you want a night of blood, madness, dirt and sex...this film is for you. It is a great story but I just did not believe in the characters (with the exeption of Henry)and hence did not much care about their fate. This made the film unexciting. Yes it looks great and authentic but every character is portrayed as brutal and none come across as really likable which gives the film an unbalanced feel. You get to the point where you just wish they would all kill each other and be done with it. This is not light entertainment or a tale for the romantic at hearts. It does tell an interesting story if in a somewhat unconvincing and nightmarish way.

VHS : Cyrano De Bergerac [1990]

Cyrano De Bergerac [1990]

starring: Gérard Depardieu, Anne Brochet, Vincent Perez, Jacques Weber, Roland Bertin
directed by: Jean-Paul Rappeneau
November 02, 1998

In this magnificent film, Gerard Depardieu does his best job in all the movies I've seen from him. The story is so beautiful and the mise-en scene is just incredible, simulating perfectly the period in which the story happened. The costumes are just amazing, incredible!!!

For people who speak or understand French this must be one of the most beautiful films in this language, and for those who think it is a romantic language, please watch this movie!!!

I can only recommend this film. Enjoy!!!

VHS : Nikita [1990]

Nikita [1990]

Nikita (Anne Parillaud) is a teenage delinquent, street punk and heroin abuser, who - as a means of securing another fix - participates in the robbery of a pharmacy owned by the parents of her fellow junkie friend. Unfortunately for them, the robbery goes horribly awry, degenerating into a gunfight with the local police, during which, her cohort is killed. Suffering from severe withdrawal symptoms, she shoots a police officer. Nikita is then arrested, tried, convicted of murder, and imprisoned for life, with parole considered after thirty years. In prison, she is drugged to simulate a death sentence; eventually waking up in an anonymous room, where a well-dressed hard man (Tchéky Karyo) enters and reveals to her that, although officially dead and buried after a suicide ... VHS : Queen of the Damned [2002]

Queen of the Damned [2002]

starring: Aaliyah|Stuart Townsend|Vincent Perez
directed by: Michael Rymer
October 28, 2002

The first time I watched it, in 2002, it was the night before one of my driving lessons... The man who was teaching me to drive was very nice and we talked a lot, and I started talking about it... I remember being so angry at this movie, that I couldn't really pay attention to the street... he laughed at me a lot... 'cause he couldn't understand what the big deal was... (not an Anne-Rice-Reader, of course!!)
and I remember saying that they couldn't have read the book, 'cause they even had the wrong hair colours... a lot of wrong hair colors!!
and that just made him laugh more...
Anyway... after years, I gave it another shot last night...
...DON'T ASK ME WHY...
I'm still so disgusted I can't even say what I think about this movie...
They shouldn't ... Read More:

VHS : Fires Within [1991]

Fires Within [1991]

starring: Jimmy Smits, Greta Scacchi, Vincent D'Onofrio, Luis Avalos, Bertila Damas
directed by: Gillian Armstrong
November 27, 1995

I bought this being a fan of Vincent D'Onofrio from Criminal Intent fame. Vincent as always was brilliant but I expected the film to centre on the relationship between Vincent and Greta but it doesn't, it centres on the relationship with Greta and Jimmy Smits. This does not mean that the film is 'rubbish', it's not, it's very well acted by all involved. There is however a feeling of the film not quite reaching its full potential and seems to centre on the political problems in Cuba not in the relationship of Vincent and Greta and the decisions that she has to make on the emergence of her husband (Smits).

All in all, a good film but I was waiting for a revelation in the film that sadly never occured.

I would say buy it but to be honest I doubt that I will watch ... Read More:
