VHS : Hello Dolly [1969]

Hello Dolly [1969]

starring: Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau, Michael Crawford, Marianne McAndrew, Danny Lockin
directed by: Gene Kelly
March 13, 2000

I have a good friend who despairs at my love of Barbra movies but he fell in love with this movie on it's first viewing and it isn't hard to see the charm in this feel-good musical. Barbra shines as Dolly Levi who takes it upon herself to sort out everyone's love life while bagging the well know half-a-millionaire horace Vandergelder, played fantastically by Walter Matthau. This film is truly feel good, nothing bad happens at all though it teeters on the brink. The first time I saw it I was waiting for Dolly's tales of how well known she is to fall apart and yet they never do. When she appears in that gorgeous dress as the Harmonia Gardens Restaurant and launches into the title song the tears spring to my eyes. That is one thing that makes this ... Read More:

VHS : Dennis [1993]

Dennis [1993]

starring: Walter Matthau, Mason Gamble, Joan Plowright, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson
directed by: Nick Castle
August 01, 1994

After my young son watched this film twice in one day I decided to watch with him, at the third showing!. `Dennis` is so typical of all children at that age, and I could see what my son found so amusing as he would tend to do the same things given half the chance. Having a bad guy also helped to keep the story going. For us adults though, Walter Matthau proves to be a real comic genius. Think of `Home Alone` but without Macaulay Culkin, thank goodness!.

Do you think grumpy is natural? Think again. Learn from the experts, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. They really make an odd couple" Odd Couple II, The - Neil Simon's" (1998). Who knew they could just get grumpier. And a new cutie has been added to the mix for this second in the grumpy series.

VHS : The Fortune Cookie [1967]

The Fortune Cookie [1967]

starring: Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Ron Rich, Judi West, Cliff Osmond
directed by: Billy Wilder
April 10, 2000

Excellent film, happily first viewed by myself courtesy of the good old BBC in the 70's, way back when they still showed decent films at Christmas (The Apartment etc) and every bit as enjoyable when watched again this weekend, & heaven knows on how many other occasions over the years!!.
I originally purchased this on the sadly dying Laserdisc format, but migrated when released on DVD for the convenience of not having to wrestle with 2 old disks and four sides. Think MGM have used the very same print for this issue as the minor imperfections in an otherwise superb image appear identical. Just go and buy it and immerse yourself in the fun, not sure why anyone would find the characters annoying, or feel that the film does not really go anywhere. The story ... Read More:

VHS : Charade (Wide Screen) [1963]

Charade (Wide Screen) [1963]

starring: Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, James Coburn, George Kennedy
directed by: Stanley Donen
June 14, 2004

What high was God on, or what prayer did he answer, to have created a woman so exquisite as Audrey Hepburn? It boggles the mind.

CHARADE pairs man's man Cary Grant with the incomparable Audrey Hepburn. (Cary who?) Audrey plays "Reggie" Lampert, recently widowed when her mysterious husband was tossed off a speeding train. Besides leaving behind four different passports and an unused getaway ticket to South America, he left two-hundred and fifty thousand ill-gotten dollars stolen from the Office of Strategic Services, precursor of the CIA, at the end of World War II. But nobody knows where it is, including Lampert's three accomplices in the crime: Tex (James Coburn), Scobie (George Kennedy), and Leo (Ned Glass). But the three crooks want it back, ... Read More:

VHS : The Sunshine Boys [1976]

The Sunshine Boys [1976]

starring: Walter Matthau, George Burns, Richard Benjamin, Lee Meredith, Carol Arthur
directed by: Herbert Ross

First let me say, this film should be given more than five stars, its brillant, its about two old guys who used to be comedy partners on stage, but george burns said I think we should end the partnership as we are getting old, but walter matthau wants to continue, so they fall out and go their separate ways, walter matthaus nephew tries to get him jobs, advertising products, at the start of the movie he has to advertise a packet of crisps, which is very funny, but he doesn't get, then his nephew hears that a network is putting on t.v, some of the old acts that only appeared on stage, so he has to try to get the two guys to work together, get ready to laugh through the entire film, he goes to his uncle who says no way, and then he goes to george burns and george burns agrees, but ...
