I will confess that this story is not as good as I thought it would be but as time passes it does grow on me. The cybermen themselves are back on track after their underused performance in 'The Invasion' and are seen to be a lot more cunning and manipulative. E.g. using human greed to aquire the services of a human agent. However I am disapointed that they don't have much involvement in the story until episode 3 but their performance makes up for that. Tom Baker is excellent as the Doctor, as usual. His banter with the Cyberleader during episode three is a mixture of seriousness and silliness and thats what makes it so good. I loved this when I was a kid. Now I'm old (haha) and have kids of my own. We sat down together this weekend to watch this film.... I knew it would be good and that the kids would love it, but I had forgotten just how good it really is. Every scene in the film is intense - exciting, sad, funny, scarey... There is no let up from begining to end. One minute you want to cry because all seems lost and the scene is overwhelmingly sad. The next, your flying on the back of a dragon-dog all excited and enchanted. Having watched hundreds of films in my lifetime so far - I have to say that this is the best film I have ever seen. Leslie Libman and Larry Williams' movie "Brave New World", which was originally written by Aldous Huxley, is about a "savage" named John in a utopian society in which mankind seems to live without any problems or issues. John is thrown in to that lifestyle but starts questioning it, not feeling comfortable with the idea of designing humans, not being in love with one another or taking free drugs so no one starts questioning things. The directors did not leave the story unedited. A good example is the very first chapter, in which important information are revealed to the READER. I bought the video because I wanted to see what Pertwee's last season was like with Sarah Jayne. After hearing bad things about Pertwee's last season, I was pleasantly surprised. Sarah Jayne was no doubt a big improvement on Jo Grant. The story begins when the Doctor and Sarah crash land on an eerie dark planet which has drained their power so it begins very atmospheric and scary, and is a pretty grippping story throughout. The sets and effects are actually quite impressive, especially when the root comes out of the ground and destroys a dalek. Just overlook the dodgy model work when the city collapses at the end. Doctor Who - The Movie [1996] [1963] This is perhaps one of the most underated DVD's in the whole Doctor Who series both new and classic. The main problem is the bad guy or more specifically the actor who portrays him, Eric Roberts is a great bad guy in lots of B'Movies but just wasn't right for this film (his choice was forced on the writers/director due to pressure from the american backers).
