It doesn't matter if you have never heard of this Irish tenor, or even like that kind of music, this is a marvelously warm film. Adrian Dunbar is a promoter of a club, in the UK, who normally books look-a-likes, however after several disasters he decides to find the man himself - Josef Locke (yes, this is the correct spelling). He travels to Ireland and after some searching he finally meets him and persuades him to come back and do one last performance. The reason for Josef being in Ireland is to avoid UK tax, of which he owes an undisclosed amount. With the UK police trying to catch him this is a more than pleasant caper. (And I bet you can't help humming the main theme, "Hear my song")
I watch this film even when the kids aren't around, its a superb film from beginning to end if you're aged 4 or 94. Its a little frightening in places but not too bad for small children. The make-up is fantastic and Anjelica Huston plays the best witch on screen since the Wizard Of Oz....really powerful and evil. I won't spoil the ending but its clever funny and they all get their just desserts 'so to speak'. One of Rowan Atkinsons better parts, Jane Horrocks' cameo role is delightful. You get the feel that this is exactly how Roald Dahl would have wanted the film to be like - full marks !!!

Like all Catherine Cookson's stories, 'The Secret' contains the perfect mixture of romance, tension and passion. This one is truly my favourite. It tells the story of Freddie Musgrave (played by Colin Buchanan aka Peter Pascoe)who's been living with and older woman ever since he was a young boy. They have a kind of love / mother-son relationship. Together they share a terrible secret which surfaces again when Belle, a young girl who also lives with them meets the charming Marcel. When they marry things start to go wrong and Freddie has to save Belle. A fascinating story for true romantics.

If you've longed to see again those magic television shows that Kenny Everett did in the early eighties, here is a brief overview of his characters and sketches from the shows. I couldn't even read the cover without having a chuckle to myself....and the spiderman sketch.....if you like silly, this IS silly!!

I have to say I am disappointed with this selection.
There was so many good monologues and sketches that could have been chosen for a tape which were passed by that it's sad that we are left with just the cynical, bitter and profane moments from Dave Allen's shows. Even most of the monologues weren't as good as what we have recently been seeing on the BBC in England from the 1971 series.
Did Dave Allen really MEAN all the stuff he came out with on these particular segments? I contrast this with what he was like in the early days when he came over as rather sweet and innocent (ok well, perhaps not that innocent!) but certainly CHARMING(with the hidden naughtiness) we all knew was there.
The Truman Show is consistantly clever, creative and funny. It's a film which everyone will enjoy as it has emotional moments, but ofcourse funny moments also. Jim Carrey really is at his best in this brilliant film.
